The Adidas Techfit jerseys SMU began wearing this year are the best looking jerseys in football, bar none.

If the players had wanted to look like they were all auditioning for Glee then they would have preferred the new Nike look.

Adidas offers classic but updated looking uniforms, so glad we've gone with them and not tried to copycat Oregon, Maryland, etc.

Adidas introduces new 'Techfit' jerseys for seven collegiate football programs

By Allan Brettman, The Oregonian The Oregonian

If UCLA's football team is able to pull off the improbable Oct. 21 and defeat the University of Oregon, theorists may want to toss the Bruins' hi-tech jerseys into the post-game analysis.

UCLA is one of seven collegiate programs that will begin this weekend wearing a new Adidas compression football jersey introduced today. Research and development workers at Adidas North America's headquarters in North Portland have worked to develop the jerseys over the past four years.

"This is all about making the athlete faster," said Mark Daniels, director of football and team sports for Adidas.

Adidas employees specializing in kinesiology, biomechanics, materials, design, wear testing, sports marketing and brand development contributed to the product, called "Techfit," Daniels said.

"Every department that touches the football category was involved," Daniels said.

With no seams on the torso, only the shoulder area, the jersey fits like a tight-fitting tube. Whereas jerseys typically are fitted with a numerical system similar to that for suits, the Techfit comes in four body sizes -- all of them tight.

Though he did not have before and after jersey weights available, Daniels said the Techfit product had been made lighter through the use of a proprietary fabric, reduced seams, and a name and numbering system. The jersey are also designed to keep players cooler with an improved ventilation system.

Besides UCLA, other Adidas-branded collegiate teams that will use the jerseys initially include Michigan, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Texas A&M and Louisville.

The teams were chosen from the 40 college football programs affiliated with Adidas in part because the football coaches at those schools were willing to make a switch at mid-season to a new jersey. Some of the schools were ready to rotate to a new jerseys regardless of whether it was a new project.

The product will be gradually introduced next season to the other college programs, which are paid to wear the Adidas product. Then sales efforts will begin with thousands of high school programs nationwide.

Among his responsibilities, Daniels serves as a customer sales representative with the collegiate football programs.

So he was present this summer when University of Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros tried on the new jersey this summer and told head coach Butch Jones, "we gotta have this."

Also this summer, he witnessed Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly assess the blue-colored home jersey and white-colored away jersey and say, "we've got a problem."

The Fighting Irish will be wearing a green jersey on Oct. 23 at The Meadowlands Sports Complex in New Jersey against Navy. Kelly was not keen on bouncing the team back to a pre-Techfit material for one game.

Adidas will have the Techfit Irish green jersey ready for the Navy game, Daniels said today.

Do you ohio state knockoff uniform guys hear yourselves? SMU has one of the great color schemes and designs with the running mustang in college sports and the blue jerseys are beautiful although a one-win season and coaches superstitions killed that scheme. The old 60's or even Doak days uniforms would be fantastic! No need to steal from anyone else! Classic. We do need to get rid of the black shoes and socks though.

If you're going to do a REAL throwback - not just a dropback - go with the khaki pants, crimson jerseys, crimson helmets, white socks and black shoes - from when we had a Heisman winner.

Great Idea!
