Re: Get rid of the lei! Let's get serious about winning!
A little history lesson as to why the lei may be a good thing.
In June, 1916, at the Battle of Jutland, one of the largest naval battles in history, the early part of the battle was fought between Admiral Beatty's six battle cruisers plus four super dreadnoughts against Admiral Hipper's five battle cruisers. One of the British BCs, the New Zealand, had a skipper who wore a Maori kilt (skirt) on the bridge that day, given to him by the New Zealanders which was supposed to bring good luck.
The British did not fare well in that early going. Two British BCs blew up with more than a thousand men dying in each ship and all the BCs as well as the super dreadnoughts were damaged except for the New Zealand. She did not receive a single hit although in the thick of the battle all afternoon.
Let him wear the lei.

I'm with you on this one. There is no way you can be serious about winning and at the same time wear a lei.

I met several of JJ's friends from Hawaii three weeks ago and they fly to our games all the way from Hawaii as friends/fans of JJ and are now fans of SMU football. The fresh leis are brought in as a gift and an honor to June and is bad karma or even an insult to the natives in Hawaii to NOT wear them. Get used to lei's as he only wears them when he has guests from Hawaii who bring fresh leis in. It's not his normal attire, and isn't a gimmick.
From what I understand from growing up in Hawaii, the leis brought by friends are supposed to bring good luck to JJ. Not wearing them would be considered rude and would bring bad luck to the team.
There are a lot of Hawaii stories/examples regarding leis and whether or not to wear them. I always wore leis given to me because I figured that I shouldn't snub my friends and I didn't want the risk of bringing bad luck upon myself.

The whole lei thing was kind of cute at first but now it looks stupid. This is Texas football. We need our coach to support and enhance the student athletes. No gimics needed. Just coach to win and provide our team with the best equipment, staff, coaching and fan base. We are poised to take the leap into BCSville. Let's get it done. No lei needed. 30 thousand plus fired up fans would help too.
Time for him to start representing SMU, June should wear bridle and reins.
GO MUSTANGS!

Maybe a saddle too....and spurs.

I like the lei. I think it brings Coach Jones some persona...kinda like Tom Landry's fedora and Bum Phillips cowboy hat and boots. Love it coach! Just continue making SMU a football program to be proud of.

I know everyone is very familiar with JJ's death and come back to life story a while back. But while I was in St louis for the WS, I visited with a fellow SMU alum who played a big part getting him to the hilltop. The two of them have been friends for many years. Anyway, his outlook on life has changed dramatically as anyone's would after something like that. There are stories of him helping other people that needed $$$ to pay for life saving medical procedures when nobody else would step up. He has kept many of these stories secret because he doesn't want the recognition. The man can hardly tie his own shoes because he himself was cut open from his neck to his knees. (however can still still swing a golf club and shoot in the low 70's which is pretty amazing) This man is a great human being and also brought us back from being irrelevant. Without him, we are are a combo of Tulane/Rice and aren't even being considered to a conference upgrade. I must say, the lei thing used to bother me too, but now I will embrace it because we are lucky to have such a quality head coach (winning or not) on the hilltop.

Sorry to say this, but get over it. Not going to happen.
It's not Texas football ... it's SMU football. Our coach happens to have lived in Hawaii, and the islands and their traditions mean a great deal to him, and we have no business telling him what to like and not like. If it helps him relax or gives him some kind of inner peace or good luck or whatever he thinks he gets from it, then keep doing it. Coach Jones is a stubborn man who believes in what he believes in, and it works -- he has won a lot of games and he has SMU winning. You're right that leis aren't needed. A band and cheerleaders aren't needed, either, but they're not going anywhere, either.
I know this is your first post, but the topic of the leis has been discussed ad nauseum around here. Coach Jones does what he does, and unless President Turner or Steve-0 tells him to lose the lei (and neither ever will, of course), Coach J isn't going to change.
Frankly, he can shave his head and wear a tutu as long as the Ponies win.

Get over it already. June will not stop wearing his lei to avoid making a few native Texans nervous.
It's all about wins & losses.

I don't like the lei, the helmet stickers, mustang mana, the geldings, or the black jerseys but I don't give a [gary patterson] about them if they help us win in anyway. As long as we are winning I don't care.
