RSFan said this in another thread:
"When he said it would be good for Hawaii that I believe was a jab at the lei haters and only half of the story. JJ has lots of people here in Hawaii who still highly respect him and plenty who want to beat his [deleted]. I believe JJ feels SMU/UH will deliver standing room only with a huge media build up that will deliver twice the benefit as the Nevada game. The duel of the Run & Shoot QB's, Moniz, the Hawaiian and McD the Haole, Honolulu will be nutz all week, the local media will be nightly non stop for two weeks prior to the event. Espn will build it to a crescendo that will compete with the BCS match ups. Every potential recruit will be drooling on their nikes. June and his staff know that town and will show those kids the time of their lives. Colt Brennan will be there and interviewed during the week and prior to the game on national tv. It will be a great game that Jones wants to put a beat down on his prodigy Rolovitch who wants to establish his presence on the national level."
Im inclined to believe him on this. Its Christmas Eve, the only way we go to this game is if we're playing Hawaii and then that is a juicy, juicy matchup. Its the only game that night and its in primetime. ESPN will promote the hell out of this game. Will the ratings be great? No, but they will be good, a lot of true college football fans will turn out to watch this. The atmosphere could be fun. It could honestly be the most interesting bowl game before Jan. 2. I hate to say it because I have been saving up miles to go to the bowl game this year if it was in the lower 48, but this is the right move for the program IF Hawaii is eligible. If not ill see yall at the Ticketcity Bowl.

"Think it is great that the Haawaii Bowl is probable. Great that we are going to be going to a bowl three years in a row. Can't believe the whining and the attacks on June.
The people complaining about not going to a bowl in Dallas are the same people not going to Ford for the scheduled games.[/quote]"
Or, the same people that don't make road trips at all (Ft Worth doesn't count). Or, only make the Hawaii Bowl in 2009, and the Championship game in 2010, and make reference to it over and over, so it seems like they travel to support the team more.

Can someone tell me why the Navy game starts at 2:30? It would really be more convenient for me if we didn't kickoff until at 7.

It would be good for me if they moved it to the Alamo Dome.

You don't need to be excited about it, except for the fact that it's our team and it's a third straight bowl game after a lifetime of seasons ending early (I didn't know about SMU during the Pony Express years). To me, seeing the Ponies play in any bowl is exciting ... especially when we win!
That said, I can't afford to go to Hawaii, and I'll be visiting my family for the holiday, so there's no way I can go. I wish the higher-ups would consider that there are a lot of fans who won't be able to afford it. They want us to pay for the honor of buying tickets and pay for Boulevard spaces and to give to the Mustang Club, etc. ... it would be nice, if they have options, if they do what they can to help us get to a bowl game. A lot of us want to be at a bowl game, but Hawaii on short notice is a very expensive trip.
There's talk that the Ticket City Bowl and New Orleans Bowl have SMU on their lists of candidates. I'd vote for either of those.

I wish they would call me before they schedule ANY game, so then it would be perfect. ;]
Re: Can someone tell why I need to be exicted about Hawaii B
A win over a lower tier big 10 school would do far, far more for SMU than a win or loss against Hawaii.

Because if we have a shot at cotton bowl (SMUs old stadium), it would make since why smu2bcs people are out there during red river rivalry. I can assure you I have been to every home game, and try to make any road games that I possibly can make. It would be a treat to play at the cotton bowl. I can understand not wanting AFB, but I dont see the logic of not playing at cotton bowl. Hawaii is only for June and rich alums. However, I did read something I like from someone who posted. June should tell SMU community if we dont fill at least 25k every home game, Ill demand the hawaii bowl game, haha

What does that have to do with where we are playing? Go to ticket city bowl its our 3rd bowl game, and if they go to hawaii its 3rd bowl game...

Agreed, a loss to lower big 10 is the equivalent of a win against hawaii. The only reason for hawaii bowl is for june to help out his former employer. I bet you anything when he retires, hes only going to talk about how much he loved hawaii, and probably move back to hawaii and take some advisor placement up there or be a recruiter for hawaii down here.

just giving a reason to be excited. When I was in school, we never went to 3 straight bowl games. Most alumni are in the same boat. I think 3 straight bowl games is excitement worthy wherever the team plays. BTW, there won't be a free buffet for you at the bowl game.

Hawaii is a reward bowl. It's warm and fun. Memphis has BBQ. Woop.
At Hawaii there is little expectation that 10,000 smu fans will show up, so when they don't it's not a knock on smu.
At Memphis or other local bowls, we will have 2-5k fans and it will be apparent that out fan base is pretty thin right now.
This will improve with time and more winning seasons. Tcu wasn't averaging 35-40k fans until only 3-4 years ago. It takes time.
What would have happened it somehow we were Houston this year and were bcs mentionable? 5k in the fiesta bowl? W don't want that.
Hawaii is a good bowl for us, and much better than mobile independence route that tcu started with.
After several winning seasons our student apps will actually have more students interested in fb.
