Not surprising, 08 and 09 classes went bust. Expecting a losing season in 2012, 2013 too if we're in the BE by then.

Good point.

I agree BRstang....its not going out on a good note to barely beat Rice and finish oh not so strong in the last 6 games. If June is right in what he says about next year being a down year...when will the 8,9 or 10 win season arrive?

8, 9, or 10 wins seasons will arrive 3 or 4 years from now if every coach recruits well and get everyone into school. And keep them eligible. No more projects recruits going into the Big East.

You really think June and his staff haven't improved the talent level? My mom has even commented on how much better the players are than a few years ago. If you can't see the improvement in talent, that's a scary thought.

No...improve it to the point where there wasn't going to be the down year that he's setting everybody up for in 2012. He's already lowballing it.
If year 5 implodes, then that would be an example of he and his staff not upgrading to the point where this thing can sustain itself year after year.
For $2.5 million per year, that's unacceptable. If some of you people are OK with a down year when a staff came here selling taking SMU to the next level, then you're gullable.
And if he's using the late start in 2008 as an excuse, then he should have canceled the Signing Day party that year where he and every coach in America come out and rave about how great this class is.
Don't hand me this business. That would also suggest that the 2009 (juniors and redshirt sophomores) are incapable of producing consistently.
But then this staff doesn't work really hard at recruiting anyway so he may be right after all.

I remember in 1981 after we lost the entire offensive line (from SE to TE) to graduation and only won the conference championship. If recruiting has improved then we will see better results over the coming years.

That's the first time he's ever said 2012 would be a step backward. Last year he said 2011 and 2012 would be potential BCS - busters. Make your mind up Jones. So inconsistent.

Maybe, just maybe, there is a much simpler point to make here.
Everything depends on the QB. If his tone is changing, maybe it is an indication that the QB situation is changing...
I know nothing about that, but it makes sense to me...

well, this year's group still has a chance to win 8 games and equal SMU's best post death penalty season. I think that's important for holding onto the current commits. Still need that Pied Piper recruit to take this program to the next level and he's still a Junior (with Spurrier still working on him to switch his commitment)
As for JJ's concerns, losing 7 of 8 starters on the OL and DL make s that legitimate. Let's hope Padron can come back as we may need a guy who can move around in the pocket...and will really need some receivers to step up.
We may find that next years's team will rely more on the run than shoot...with what should be a strong stable of running backs coming back

speaking of spurrier - he changed his offense based on the talent he has at rb (lattimore). JJ may have to do the same.

This is a dumb thread-the 2008 Class for the most part are graduating this year. Now a few maybe redshirted and are still here-not very many I can assure you. But how does a late start in 2008 lead to a downward trend in 2012. 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011. Mitch is actually right here. That's not an acceptable excuse. Losing a lot of starters especially in the Lines might arguably be an excuse but the 2008 Class is largely irrelevant in 2012 and roster weaknesses should have been addressed long before the 2012 season. I think that statement was a "June moment" ie SMU costs $80,000 per semester. But have fun arguing an irrelevant point.
