Fedora, Sumlin, or Smart will be at aTm. But one thing is for sure, Larry Fedora is gone from USM for another HC job and you can take that to the bank.

If Mike Sherman is dismissed by Texas A&M, which doesn't appear likely at the moment, Bob Haller of the Arizona Republic believes Houston's Kevin Sumlin is a natural fit to become the next head coach of the Aggies.

"Sumlin, who takes a 12-0 record into Saturday's Conference USA Championship game against Southern Miss, is a top candidate for many schools," Haller wrote. "But if the Texas A&M job opens, he would seem to be an ideal fit. He has worked in the Big 12 for seven seasons, including two at A&M, where he served as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and receivers coach."

Sumlin's decision at that point would greatly affect the coaching search at Arizona State, where he is considered the frontrunner.

"If Sumlin falls through, ASU could turn its attention to Sumlin's opponent in Saturday's Conference USA Championship -- Southern Mississippi's Larry Fedora," Haller finished.

Houston offensive coordinator Jason Phillips, who is being considered at multiple other locations, would be the logical replacement for Sumlin in Houston.

Apparently that is a rift (to put it lightly between the aTm AD who is good friends with Sherman and the big money boosters who want Sherman out. I guess we will have to see who wins.

The other factor is that Bill Byrne, the AD, is nearing the end of his contract. And there has been the thinking that he will not get an extension and will "retire" within the next 18 months...I think I heard 18 months.

Bill Byrne is a good AD.
