WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
Memphis tried this with Larry Porter.
Porter was a hot-shot recruiter at LSU and a Memphis alum, but had never been a coordinator - he was brought in specifically because of his success as a recruiter. He brought in former Alabama head coach Mike DuBose to provide some experience, and even managed to recruit well (Memphis still has a few kids committed who picked them over SEC schools,) and look what happened - it was an unadulterated disaster. Memphis went from really bad to even worse.
Mason should be looked at as a legitimate candidate, and he may well make a run at Klemm to keep him - maybe he's ready to be a coordinator. But Klemm should NOT be made HC.

How is it that you were about to type your screen name without the underscore when you say your board is supposed to be broken?

SMU needs a young, dynamic, coach that can bring excitement and a new image for SMU, especially it exams and the African American community...
I have no problem with a big name, but with the competition this year it's going to be hard...
Why don't we save 2 recruiting classes, some money and give a young guy a shot with a short leash. If it doesn't work out in 2-3 years we pull it back and hopefully at a time when we can have a better chance of landing someone without having to overpay for Dave wandstat.
If he is up to letting mason coach, give him the job and let him become oc and groomed to take the job.
Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program, and when you find a guy going into USC and ucla backyard and taking their guys...you need to hold on to that.
ESP when he is young, hard working, belichek groomed, African American.

I'd love Wannstedt. Guy was a dynamite recruiter at Pitt.

Anyone would have failed at Memphis, worst facillities and atmosphere...I.e. SMU 1998

And TCU did this with Gary Patterson and it has worked pretty well I would say.

Klemm is a great recruiter. It night be worth a shot. Also would be economically feasible.

Exactly. It'd be like hiring a high school coach directly into a college HC position. Bad bad bad odds of being successful.
Hire a proven successful DIA head coach only. We cannot afford to mess around with up and comers. We've damn near missed this round of realignment. We need to get better fast or we are in the new DI-AA for good.

No. Fatterson had been an assistant coach at various schools since the early 80s and had been the DC at TCU and at least one other school. Totally different from Klemm who has been coaching for what, 3 years?

You guys are off base, we have the infrastructure in place, the admin is listing to Lloyd and ford, all we need is to keep the best players coming and ak can do that.
I am fine with him as oc or hc in waiting, but unless you want to lose 2 years of players you need to keep him

You are not going to get fedora or chad Morris, not this year, to much competition. Keep the synergies and players and lets see how it goes short term...

Maybe klemm can recruit an experienced head coach, x's and o's guy, etc and then be part of the staff. He seems to be able to recruit everyone else.
