SMU hasn't had a former head coach be a head coach again since Forrest Gregg (and his was in the CFL). All of this "I thought he was an honorable man" stuff is bogus because coaches leave for other jobs all the time, and until SMU gets to the level of Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska or Oklahoma, it will always be a stepping stone job and not a destination job.

I will be sad if Jones leaves because he hasn't finished what he started, but he left the program in far better shape than he found it.

June reached out to ASU and ULCA, they did not initiate the contact.

I don't think it is a leverage issue.

I look at this whole ASU "flirt" as one of two things: 1) he's trying to get more from the administration, or 2) he has sincere interest in the ASU job. If it's the later, then why wouldn't he be sending out feelers? Moreover, why wouldn't he continue to recruit this weekend -- most of these players are committing to him, not SMU (sorry to burst your bubble). Regardless, he's completely within his right to look at opportunities.

Now, if it's that he's trying to get "more" from SMU, that one is a little more perplexing. If he's asked for more and hasn't received it, what else can he do but exercise what little leverage he has right now? Many of you have criticized him for using the "big weekend", but there's a small window where he has some leverage to get more to be successful (more money, academic concessions, etc.). I'm sure JJ has just told the kids here this weekend that they'll have a scholarship regardless, which is being echoed by the recruits. Leaving SMU may very well be his only leverage. Seriously, you tell me one other option he has for affecting change NOW? What does he do in 30 days when an underpaid AK is getting picked off by UCLA?

June Jones and his coaches are on the cusp of landing a top 35 class. There are relatively few "fans" and he needs them being an advocate for the changes he's trying to make. If you don't like his style of offense, fine. If you're angry he hasn't developed a better option at QB, fine. Just don't kick his [deleted] for playing the one card he has to get this program where it needs to be. If he wants to play with fire, I'll leave that to be discussed between JJ, SO, RGT, and the CoC.
