I was going to take some time trying to reconcile this statement with the reports of an accepted offer elsewhere what was yanked, but don't think it is worth the energy. Enough is enough. He's staying (for now), we have a bowl game in about a month, and we are on our way to a BCS conference. All I ask now, at this particular point in time, is that the players take all their frustration, confusion, hurt feelings, etc. and find the internal discipline to channel it and beat the ever-loving [Gary Patterson] out of PITT! Hope the kids get healthy, get through finals, enjoy their (brief) holidays with family and come out to play. Everything else now is just noise. I'm over it.

I do think he was open and honest with SMU about his job search. Otherwise, we wouldn't be keeping him. One would think that his contract includes language about his ability to search for other opportunities. He has consistently said he wants to build something solid and sustainable and I believe that part as well. And he now has very real motivation to make this a super recruiting class. If pulls in great recruits after this fiasco, then he will increase his marketability.

I knew that Meyer would jump from SMU to the NFL at the first opportunity. That wasn’t some secret. We all knew if Jones was successful here, he would use that to advance to a better opportunity. This was a Keystone Cops version of a job search and it looks bad for all involved. Maybe this adversity at the coaching position will redouble everyone’s effort to improve their success and reputations.

nice canned response, written and approved by someone else i'm 100% sure. i know it isn't going to happen, but he should get his rear end to every local news station for face time. just put it out there, and be honest. people don't want to be patronized like this.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Damage control. But his agent did seek out other schools to my understanding,

That was a 'slime-ball' statement and he couldn't even give the players, fans and university the respest of issuing it personally.

Mustangs go better without June-sauce.

Agreed, which is why my confidence that we won't lay an egg actually has gone up. These coaches are going to coach the game of their lives. Why? Because it is the ONLY way they have a prayer of staying relevant as a staff when they move on. If you accept the premise that the players will play for each other regardless of how they feel about June and add it to a coaching staff fighting for its life, PITT could have a very rough game ahead of them.

His statement had this line "...am committed to this University." Well that’s true because you were rejected by ASU alumni and you have a contract for $2 million a year and we are obligated to pay it. Statements that say we were benevolent or forgiving and took him back don’t hold water. We had to do that or buy him out. Is that $2 million a year until 2014? Cheaper to keep him, but he is damaged goods.
Any recruit will be hesitant because we all know JJ is looking to jump.
Those that didn't want you still don’t, and some of us that did, now don’t. JJ lost all around on this.

PonyPride wrote:“In the past week, multiple schools have contacted me about their vacant head coaching positions. I did not seek them out, but I did listen to these opportunities. I was open and honest with the SMU administration throughout this process and I am very appreciative of their understanding. I am happy with the progress we have made at SMU and am committed to this University. We have accomplished much, but I believe we can do much more. I’m thankful for the opportunity to lead the SMU football program as we return to national prominence and make the monumental move into the BIG EAST Conference. We will now turn our focus to the BBVA Compass Bowl – our third straight bowl berth – and to finalizing an amazing 2012 recruiting class. The future is bright for SMU football.”
