The complete lack of professionalism by ASU by letting the whole situation leak by the hour exacerbated the process.

The lack of veracity by JJ during and after is also a cause for the lack of support for JJ going into the future.

No one begrudges JJ for looking and even accepting a better opportunity, it is the fact that this played out hourly in a most embarrassing light just as SMU was finally achieving AQ status in the Big East that has unleashed the firestorm of outrage.

The marriage is forever imperiled and divorce is imminent.

Thanks for a different perspective, Edward.

First, I really don't have all the facts. I have news reports that often are not accurate. And some of this stuff was 'leaked' which also raises one's suspensions. I am looking forward to Jones continued success at SMU. I feel fortunate that Orsini and key alumni brought Jones here. We are relevant for the first time in a generation. And I really don’t feel Jones has been dishonest. Not very good a t PR but that was obvious early in his stint with SMU. That isn’t one of his key to successes skills.

Jones has been open with many of us. He is pretty open in his weekly Mustang Club meeting. That is something he could avoid. He never signed a ‘for life’ contract with us. And coaches come and go so his interest in other programs is understandable. And this is big business and these are how the big boys play. This is our first time to have our coach playing with the big boys.

Most on this board are the diehard fans that have been with SMU during the lean years. So the change from yearly bitter disappointment to success has caused some of us to get very attached to success. And many of us are desperate to cling to it. See, we have known so much failure that we don’t know if there can be life after June now.

And last, for many of us this season wasn’t the success we were hoping to achieve. So his leaving after a slightly less than satisfying season also hits a nerve. Particularly when it appears some great players he was recruiting to SMU would change from SMU to ASU. It’s one thing to leave; it’s another to take talent when one leaves. It is part of the big time but still not copacetic.

And we owe ASU a big thanks. The sudden change in the offer may just beach slap our coach back to earth. And on this Earth, his marketable skills depend on us winning.

Edward,

It was just how it was handled. It could have been handled better.

I have no problem with anyone looking into a better job opportunity and quite frankly, any SMU fan that doesn't see the advantages a program like ASU has over SMU is simply in denial. Can't blame JJ for looking and even accepting what he thought was a better/done deal. Can't blame him if he even talked to some of the recruits that were interested in SMU ONLY because they wanted to play for these coaches (and really weren't all that excited about getting an opportunity to attend SMU on a full ride)

As someone who has managed people for years, I'd rather have an "open door" policy and would hope my employees don't feel like they have to sneak around behind my back (calling in sick) to interview with someone else. I also appreciate the opportunity to discuss with my good employees "why" they are looking and I've always had the attitude that if someone leaves, I hope it was for a truly better situation.

Hopefully, that's what is going on here and that JJ has a good enough relationship with SO and the C of C to allow him to come back energized to keep improving this program..provided that's what he wants to do. If he is just unhappy here and doesn't think he can do anymore than what he's done (elevated the program to the point where we are separating ourselves from the lower echelon teams), then arrangements need to be made to let him go. Let's trust SO to do his job.

I'll say it again: It never ceases to amaze me how there are always a few people on here who could have a bird fly over and $h!t on their shoulder, but try to convince everyone else on here with great conviction that it is simply chocolate they were planning on saving for later.

Seems to me like BRStang is one of those guys who allows his employees to be open about looking at other job offers and wishes them well no matter their choice, so long as they don't start working for another company and against BRStang's company while they are still BRStang's employee

I also keep hearing or reading (like in Edward's thread) that SMU is "back".
That's a huge misconception.
It's more like SMU is still attempting to get started to what we want to achieve.

And to Edward I am one of those who would like to move on from JJ but I don't hate him.
