Ponyte, could not agree more.
I was very disappointed in the way this season wound up because I felt we had better athletes than at least two teams that beat us. I do believe that there were extenuating circumstances. After A&M, the Mustangs went on a winning streak and when they beat TCU and UCF I felt we had a real football team almost like the teams in 1980-81. I was seduced by their success and felt that even the QB choice was correct. Then came the USM, Navy and Tulsa losses and the allusion was shattered. Staggering home with a win over Rice did not help.
BUT, the winning streak, with McDermott at QB may have seduced us all including the coaches. By the time that opposing defenses got a "book" on McD as to his strengths and weaknesses and he and the offense appeared toothless, McD also began to accumulate injuries and apparently Padron's back injury made him unavailable and Kaiser is still hors d combat because of sickness and there was no one left to play QB unless JJ had some eligibility left. I would have gone to Greenbauer and the zone read like the Broncos but that is another story. Then we lose one of the better RBs in the US and then a place kicker. Pretty desperate situation so maybe this season was partly bad luck.
I still don't believe JJ can get us where we should be but he can still make us better and perhaps even become a better coach himself. Sometimes a bucket of cold water like the withdrawal of the offer can make one take a hard look at oneself and make a better man of the one who got the bucket. It is what it is and negative thinking gets us nowhere. I hope for the best and believe that JJ is a better man today than he was a week ago and he was a pretty good man then. We will see and overall things are looking up for the Mustangs.

That was precisely the point of my sarcasm...like June read Ponyfans.com, saw that we wanted McDermott, played him to appease us and now was getting unfairly crucified for giving us what we wanted. I appreciate the bowl games but, I don't overly laud them either. A majority of teams play in bowl games, we happen to be one of them which is a joy to me as a fan, but hardly Earth-moving.

And the point of the McD comment was pure sarcasm as well. Simply pointing out that some folks screamed and got their wish. Then they complain when it didn't work out like their fantasy.
Ron Meyer was brutally honest with me. No doubt he said things I didn’t want to hear or appreciate. But I knew where I stood. And he work us like rented mules. The first year it was no secret that his desire was to run as many folks off as possible.
After all that, I would go to Hell with Ron Meyer. Even to this day.
Earlier this year Meyer showed up on the Vard. He was at a teammate’s location. My wife and kids were there but I was away getting something out of a car. They texted me that Meyer was there. They later kidded me about how it was the only thing that would make me run and how I probably ran over folks trying to get to Meyer.
What they did know was I had to take time to collect myself. After all these years, all the hell he put us through, I was in tears as I headed to see him. So I took my time heading back to see Meyer so I wouldn't look like a 5 year old.
Players love their coach. They can and will forgive a lot. They will also put up with a lot. The current players are no different from any previous SMU player. If they love Jones, they will forgive and they will play hard.

You've clearly got a short memory then, because you must have forgotten where we've come from. It's absolutely earth moving, and for someone who grew up in the '80s, was too young to remember the good times and only remembers going to all the games at Ownby when we were terrible, being a student at SMU when we had a chance to go to a bowl game only to see it taken away by a then winless TCU it's without any shadow of a doubt earth shattering that we could go to a bowl game for 3 straight years.

But we didnt play in these "so easy to get in" bowl games before June arrived!

58% of teams go to bowl games. It's making a D on a test. Especially when you play cupcakes like SFA or Northwestern State. I'm grateful but honestly, getting to a bowl nowadays is so ho-hum, it's like a minimum standard in my mind. You can call me ungrateful, short-minding or whatever, but only 50 of 120 teams are staying home this winter and we get to choose who we face 4 out of the 6 games we need to win, so to me, all it says is that you are slighly better than less-than-average.

But wouldn't you agree that's a vast improvement over being ranked perennially in ESPN's the Bottom 10? I would say it's a monster improvement.

June didn't see the attendance he wanted at the UCF game, started to believe that his [Gary Patterson] didn't stink, and mentally checked out for the season expecting to get a new job elsewhere. Lets hope he has come back to reality and is ready to do some real work. This team could have a great future these next few years with a fully engaged June. All the improvements he complained about are already being done, and with BE payout we will have a new marketing staff. June's instability does make it hard to snag a few quality recruiters to help out Klemm (who may very well leave).
The question is, Will June lead SMU into the Big East in 2013? The ASU mess was a wake up call that June will not simply retire like many thought, and SMU needs to be ready to dump June as soon as a quality HC opens up or we will be the ones left with a vacancy and sliding backwards.

I've been a part of too many good teams to accept that besting 58th-percentile is anything to brag about. Believe me, I'm thankful for it but it's also something that, every time it's brought up, I interpret as just a nice thing to say to acknowledge SMU is continuing to improve, not something anybody is really bowed over by.
