The day he committed, the articles also said June Jones was likely not going to be hired by ASU. One ASU site even said that it was the power of message board posters that caused the administration to move on. On the day he committed, perusing the publicly available information would have pointed to June NOT going to ASU, so he had to have heard it from someone with inside info.

Wow. I've read most of the threads on here since this story broke. I don't recall anyone calling June a low-life or no-good bum. And ponyboy, you and I must have a very different definitions of vitriolic hate, crucifixions, and lynchings. Some people's opinions have been over the top, but your bashing of the fans is pretty over the top too. Spare me the lecture when you are using extreme terms like that regarding football fans.
Lots of people have said they don't trust him now, but why does that matter unless they are a player? Oooohhh, some fans on a message board don't trust the coach! So what? Some people want him gone, some people want him to stay. That is the same as any other school and any other coach in the country.
My personal opinion is June has done an amazing job here, but with the late season implosions the last two years, I'm not sure someone else couldn't do as good of a job or better moving forward. I also feel the events of the last week may make it difficult for him to go forward if he isn't committed to be here for a number of years. Therefore, it may be time to thank him and move on. That's my opinion. You are free to have a different opinion.
Regardless, this is OUR place. A place for fans to cheer and vent frustrations when each is warranted. A lot of us don't live in Dallas anymore and don't have many people around us who care to listen to us go on and on about SMU football, so we come here to talk about it with other SMU fans. Most of the posters on this forum are some of the most committed fans of SMU, but if you don't like the discussion here, go somewhere else.
Most of us were fans before June was here and will be fans after June is gone--whether that is next week or ten years from now. So if you want to get into who it is better to bash--SMU fans or the SMU coach--I'll side with the people who are passionate about SMU football, even if they are bashing the coach. If you think a coach whose only connection to the school is that he coached here for a couple of years cares more about SMU than the people who went to school there, you need a dose of reality.

I think everyone's real problem is that Jones seems to be demanding respect, fairness, and common decency (to quote you) from SMU without offering the same in return. SMU has also done a lot for Jones too --- paid him $2 million a year, basically jumped whenever he said jump (lights, turf, academic standards, Mustangs, black unis, lockerroom renovations, you name it). He (and his agent) seemed capable of discretion when looking to leave Hawaii, but did not provide SMU with the same level of respect and decency, especially given the inauspicious timing. Plus, in the wake of last week, he has essentially asked SMU fans to believe the ridiculous story that he never had any offer and the reason he is still here is NOT because said offer was pulled. His "believe me, nothing happened" attitude is insulting. Even his quotes in the paper afterward did not say he's at SMU for the long haul because he cares about SMU, but instead he cares about his local charity in Dallas, and then he offers the backhanded "compliment" that SMU has come a long way, but he had no idea how bad it was before he got here. He wants us to respect, honor, and accept his Hawaiian traditions and customs, while ignoring -- or worse -- SMU's traditions and customs.
I really want to give Jones the benefit of the doubt. His players and coaches really seem to admire him, and that says a lot. But if he really wants to feel supported and get butts in seats he is going to have to (1) win more than 7 games, especially after starting 5 and 1, (2) accept some of the blame when we don't win more than 7 games, instead of solely blaming the lack of talent (which he not only recruited but also pumped up at the beginning of the year), and (3) throw us loyal fans a bone every now and again by actually saying something nice about SMU, demonstrating that he actually wants to be here and build the future of SMU fuootball (not just his own resume and bank account), and not making it all about the June Loves Hawaii show.

CalallenStang wrote:Leigh, allow me to ask you a question.
Why did Brown commit to ASU then back out after it turned out that JJ wasn't going there and commit to Nebraska instead?
So, for that entire deal, here are the only "facts" we know, to my knowledge.
1) Brown visited ASU on the week of the 18th.
2) Brown has not visited SMU
3) Klemm is Brown's recruit.
4) The same weekend of the turmoil, Brown switched his commitment to ASU
5) Then Brown switches to Nebraska, the school he visited on the 11th.
I would make the following assertions:
- There is no indication that Jones has talked to Brown much at all.
- There were also rumors Klemm was going to ASU.
- In fact, if you were going to go conspiracy theory, I would say it is much, much more likely and plausible that if anyone was telling the recruit to "go with them", it would be Klemm, not coach Jones.
Personally, I think the assertion that Jones was trying to get Brown to follow is absurd. I also think the assertion that Klemm was trying to make Brown follow him is more likely, but also not true.
I would suggest the most likely scenario is that a young man saw a bunch of turmoil, switched his commitment to the last place he visited (ASU), who probably called him and told him, hey, it is a mess over at SMU, commit to us. And then, in the end, thought about it and decided he liked the first place best, and committed to Nebraska.
Pony Fans is turning into an Alex Jones message board.

Three-star linebacker Thomas Brown has narrowed down his college list to SMU and Nebraska
-by PonyStampede.com Dec 1, 2011
Arizona State was OUT. If he simply decided that there was too much instability at SMU, he would have committed to Nebraska. Instead, he went to ASU...Jones or
someone on the staff that was hired by Jones most likely was responsible for that as he had already ruled ASU and their staff out.
http://nebraska.scout.com/2/1137524.htmlJunipero Serra linebacker Thomas Brown has had an interesting week.
First it was his commitment to Arizona State. Then after a few hectic hours in Phoenix, where June Jones was not named the head coach, Brown hosted Nebraska wide receiver coach Rich Fisher for an in-home visit. It was then when he changed his commitment to Nebraska, something that appears to solid

We will never entirely agree. But one will hear (read) a variety of interesting opinions.

I wasn't referring to you but thanks for the response. I want to hear it from Leigh (under psuedonym Andrew D. Wilson)
I'd like for Leigh to tell us who tweets for him. Jones said Leigh didn't do it.

someone somewhere posted a tweet from Brown that said he had to take SAT again because it was too low. I know I read it about 2 hours ago. As I've pointed out there is an upper limit on number of players you can SIGN now. That could be a factor in his case
