I was thinking that comparatively Ohio State got off extremely light compared to USC. It isn't the dollar difference between Bush and the Ohio State Players, but the same crime, more counts of it, and a wide disparity in punishments. I saw one report today that OSU can even manage how they lose the Scholarships over the three years.
I guess the big difference is USC fought the NCAA and OSU didn't.

Is anyone really surprised that OSU got slapped a bit?
Urban is probably more miffed at losing 9 scholies/year for three years than a stinkin' one year bowl ban.
Without doubt the NCAA has no level playing field and they relished punishing the little arrogant Private Methodist School in a large metropolis. I'll let you decipher the analogy.
It will be really interesting to see what the NCAA does to the other arrogant Private School in Miami with a mere 108 student/athletes' alleged violations in comparison to the Train Wreck at Penn STATE (ie Big Public State University)!
Does anyone see a pattern of the NCAA trying to keep their grip on College Football but realizing that if the punishment for the Big Public Universities is perceived as too harsh they may see the Big Boys take their football and form a new Super Conference Governing Agency while giving the NCAA a well deserved middle finger salute.
BTW We Trojans are not pleased at being the second most heavily punished program next to you all know who!

Pony Dad you misunderstand. Ohio State lost 9 Scholarships total (avg 3 per year). Not nine per yer for three years. They lost 10% the number of scholarships that USC did.

I've been gone all day but my understanding was OSU had self imposed 5 Scholarships a year for 3 years and the NCAA tacked on an additional 4 scholarships a year for 3 years.
My info was from some radio shows so the information was pretty jumbled as no one wanted to discuss anything other than the Clippers whacking the Lakers last evening!
Stallion please clarify!

It's definitely only a total of 9. OSU only offered a total of 5 before the ruling. (5 total over 3 years, not 5 per year for three years.) So they are only limited to 82 a year for the next 3 years. A lot of schools don't even use all 85 every year anyway, so it is basically nothing.
Add on top of that, OSU is a state school, so they will have an easier time just convincing 2 or 3 more kids to walk-on instead, without having to come up with $120,000 in tuition to do so.

That not that easy to do. Especially when you have to pay for your own tattoos.

Didn't SMU get similar penalties about 5 years back for a phone call or something rather sedentary in comparison? 6 schollies over 3 years or something to that effect?

Or am I confusing this with the academic fraud scandal back in 2000 where we lost a coach and some other penalties?
Need a refresher.

The NCAA looked pretty Keystone Copish on this one. OSU flat out lied to the NCA so its players could compete in a BSC game. The NCAA took the bait and swallowed the hook line and sinker. My guess is the NCAA, very cautiously, threw in the Bowl ban to get a little payback. Had OSU not lied, there would be no bowl band.
The NCAA knows it can't hit OSU too hard. If OSU backs out of the NCAA, the other Big Boys will quickly follow and the NCAA will fold like a cheap accordant.
3 scholarships a year is nothing for OSU to overcome.

Stallion: I think you would benefit from taking a reading comprehension course.

Are you talking about the assistants that paid people to take the SAT's for recruits, or was there another one after that? The SAT thing was further back than 2000 because I was still in school. Don't think we got hit for anything much for that one. I know they fired the coaches, but there wasn't much fallout. Don't think we got much of anything for the book selling stuff before that either.

I thought we had one in late 90's early 00's for the SAT thing. And another one a few years after that. Mid 00's.
may have a research project for my conference call at 10.

Yeah, SAT thing was early Cavan years. I'm thinking it must have been 99. Couldn't have been right away in 97, and I was in Copenhagen during the 98 season--but maybe it was that spring that the story broke.
