I'd like to see it annually go to a minority as well-someone who has overcome obstacles to become a team leader with high academic success. There is nothing wrong with that. There are other awards for Team MVP. For those that don't know Jerry LeVias was an Academic All-American. I think that message is worth honoring. The real message from Jerry LeVias' career was not that he was a great football player at SMU-its what he overcame to achieve success

Stallion, given your outline, might Ryan Smith qualify?

I really don't know. But I'd like to think it wasn't some one who barely scraped by academically unless he really turned his transcript around. I love Darius but we seem to have to hold our breath each semester hoping he passes.

I think we all have a spot for DJ. Just such a wonderful player. Plus as you noted Stallion, there is other awards for MVP and such. That is why I thought of Smith, who has done well in school. Other name that came to mind was Victor Jones, but i am not as sure about his academics.

Jeremy Johnson and Ronnell Sims were reportedly School Leaders with good academic performances in High School.

I agree. Academic success, community service, leadership more important than football skills alone for this award.

I agree as well but I would like it to be someone that spends a decent amount of time on the field otherwise it diminishes it in my opinion. They talk about it in a lot of broadcast and if it is someone that doesn't play as much they will never mention it. Have to find a nice mix in my opinion.

McJunkin. Can an offensive lineman wear 23?

Yes, agreed absolutely. A starter definitely preferred. Just not necessarily the MVP. Banjo was perfect. I don't know enough about some of the younger guys - Stephon Sanders I think has a strong academic record ... at least in HS - he was named an academic all state according to his bio.

For a younger player, I would go with Sanders also.

That would be AWESOME.
First of all, it would be cool to see an offensive lineman with an unorthodox number. (Didn't someone post a rule from someplace that said offensive linemen are "encouraged" to wear jerseys with numbers between 50 and 79?)
Secondly, his effort at Texas A&M to protect the guy who'd had his helmet knocked off speaks volumes about Junk's character. He would be very deserving of the honor.

he seems like a sure candidate for the next few years. Really enjoyed sitting behind his mom at the bowl game and then congratulating her at the hotel bar afterwards. Seems like a really winning support group he has; plus he is a playmaker in the making.

Sanders is an absolute stud, and he's just scratching the surface of his ability.
