Thought so; wanted to make sure my memory was serving me well. Knew him, super smart guy. Did not realize he had a son old enough to be recruited. Now I really feel old.

Yeah, god forbid we get any more players who are rated like Ja'Gared Davis, Taylor Reed, Kelvin Beachum, J.T. Brooks, Bryce Tennison, Keenan Holman, Zach Line and every other good player we had that nobody wanted but our coaches saw something in ... and got something out of. Even after the "end of world" fiasco that was the exodus of the California guys who might or might not have paned out, this class still has more than half its players carrying 3 stars, right? Remember when PonyFans would have killed for a few guys with 3 stars? Our coaches obviously can identify talent. No coach is right about every kid, but our coaches have a hell of a lot better track record in the evaluation of talent than their predecessors did. Lo and behold, they also have three straight bowl appearances. Coincidence? No way.

You do make an interesting point but the people who recruited most of those kids are not even here anymore.

JG Davis - Coach Hundley (gone)
Taylor Reed - Coach Hundley (gone)
Kelvin Beachum - Bennett (one of the predecessors you spoke of, gone)
J. T. Brooks - Bennett (one of the predecessors you spoke of, gone)
Bryce Tennison - Bennett (one of the predecessors you spoke of, gone)
Keenan Holman - Reinebold mostly ( I don't know if he is still here or not)

I think the over the current staff as a whole is the concern.

I hope we get this guy, regardless of what happens with Myers (who hopefully stays, of course with the Ponies). Check YouTube. He looks like a pretty powerful blocker. I honestly don't know enough to say how polished he is as a pass blocker, and most of the clips on this video are of him run blocking. But he looks strong, and it has to be a good thing to get more legacy players. It can only get the families of the former players and their friends back involved.

If we get RIce that will be one UNT commit down and one to go (Walling).

Heard that we offered him either Thursday or Friday. I was told that we will get him. It would nice to get his brother also.

and now let's go through the list of 2 star players who had zero contribution to the team... where should we start?

This kid is a legacy with 7 other offers including Duke. Glad to have him. I have seen nothing to indicate he was ever committed to UNT although he was offered by them.

Brett Vito reported that he was a commit. Some schools during this time have silent commits to keep other schools from knowing. Brett is just a reliable as Rivals or Scout in reporting these matters as he has covered UNT sports for years.

http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/archi ... battl.html

"UNT picked up a commitment a while back from offensive lineman Sam Rice, one of Busby's Coppell teammates.

McBride said that SMU has come in on Rice now and is trying to flip him. UNT is already in a fight with the Ponies over Chase Walling, another offensive lineman who has yet to make up his mind what he wants to do."

Offered early last week and had nothing to do with Seaver Myers getting an offer from A&M.

Some good news, some bad news (UNT loses on to SMU)

Brett Vito E-mail News tips

I checked back in with Louisiana defensive back Devante Davis after his visit to UNT this afternoon. (This is the good news). He loved UNT and seems pretty solid on his commitment to the program.

Davis said he still might visit La. Tech next weekend, but it seems like UNT will be able to hang on to him. UNT will likely play Davis at safety, where he could compete for a starting spot next year.

The bad news is it looks like UNT has lost Sam Rice, the offensive lineman out of Coppell. Over the last couple of days it sounded like he would switch his commitment from UNT to SMU. I checked in with David Busby, the cornerback from Coppell who committed to UNT a while back. Busby said that Rice has decided to go to SMU.

I gave Rice a call. He didn't answer and has not called me back.

I have not talked to Rice, so I don't know for sure, but it sounds like he is going to SMU.
