Re: Recruiting Wrap-Up Event
Yes I've posted numbers that show that between 2008-2009 the number of 3 stars jumped about 80% or so-I forgot the exact number but almost 2/3rds of the Texas crop is 3 stars or above

It is crazy, isn't it? The only way to evaluate the players is to take a look at the offers they get, and see how they are evaluated across a variety of recruiting sources. That takes forever, and I tend to not worry about it until the end of the season.
In reality, what you want is a coaching staff that is better at evaluating talent than the recruiting services. That is what makes Sumlin, Harbaugh, Belichick, Patterson, and, yes, our coaching staff better than the others. They can evaluate talent better and pull good players in that are under the radar of everyone else.

Actually it took me less than 10 minutes to find out the SMU only has 3 players who have quality offers from other schools.
Seaver Meyers has an offer from A&M
Lincoln Richard has offers from Arkansas and Arizona
Daijuan Stewart has offers from Pitt and Arizona
Look at TCU, they have several individuals with better offers than our entire class. Case in point, Devonte Fields has offers from Michigan, Oklahoma, A&M, Mizzo and Arizona.

Re: Recruiting Wrap-Up Event
We are losing significant ground to TCU, some loss definitely expected after B12, two BCS bowls and a Rose Bowl win...but a significant portion of the growing gap is our own fault. Unacceptable. We've got to right this ship and get a new salesplan for 2013.
Re: Recruiting Wrap-Up Event
Hey Mex, I like Tom Mason and think he's a great DC. He may be a great recruiter but I have not seen the evidence or body or work. I will even concede that point. Still doesn't change my mind. Young and aggressive blood is my hope for our next HC.
Indeed, I did know both coaches who are now no longer with us. Good, bad or otherwise, they worked - hard. And I agree with you re: Saban and his policies.
My point is this. Forget the assistants. We have problems, I lay them at the feet of our HC, I simply don't believe or trust him. I'm wondering if recruits are beginning to feel that way?
MY opinion and mine alone.

Re: Recruiting Wrap-Up Event
Mason has had his hand in the majority of our defensive players. The former assistants recruited a few but they never made it to school.
As far a your criticism of our head coach, I agree. I don't believe recruiting is something he that he had a full understanding of when he arrived. He has had no real prior experience, even at Hawaii he depended on players coming in through third party introductions, other coaches clueing him in on academic casualties, etc. and he had no recruiting budget to really mix it up. As a friend suggested June's classes were really a "dog's breakfast"--some from Hawaii, some recommended by high school coaches, some referred by friends, some casualties from other programs.
We do need to lever his coaching abilities and reputation and work on his inexperience. I am disappointed two of his hires failed. Ultimately that is his fault, for not hiring or managing well. He needs perhaps a clear number two to manage not just the staff, but also the recruiting effort. He needs to realize that he has gotten nowhere hiring old buddies in need of medical insurance or a second or third chance.
I believe Orsini will step up coaching the coach--no question June owes Orsini big-time, there roles are now properly adjusted between AD and Head Coach.

I'm just trying to understand your logic here. Just because one service changed its ratings system, is looking for a reason to bash it? Help me understand.
I think you overthink this too much. This is such a subjective business anyway. If one site likes Player A more than another site because he can do the hokey pokey better, it's pretty much a wash.
These sites -- by likely talking to HS coaching staffs around the country to find out who the D1 players are -- have about 95% percent of the same players identified. The ratings are what they are -- subjective.
It's just a matter of who you choose to believe.
Just my opinion.
Re: Recruiting Wrap-Up Event
Mex, agree he needs a clear # 2, maybe that's Mason or Phillips or...
I/we can only hope Orsini is paying attention, realizing there is a problem right now, and at least communicating with him to the point that jones understands he is being watched and there will be accountability. But then again, how can you have faith that corrective action will be taken?

I do not think he is bashing the service, I think he is pointing out, in his own way, that when someone compares the number of 3-stars in a 2012 signing class to the number of 3-stars in a 2007 (or whatever) signing class, they are comparing apples to oranges.
By the way, and I am sure Stallion will correct me if I am wrong, I believe this applies only or predominantly to Rivals, Scout has not inflated the number of 3-stars as far as I have heard.

What Big East coaching staffs is our coaching staff better than? Since we are in The Big East that is who this class and others to come will be competing against. So name the coaching staffs in The Big East that ours is better than?
