The UCF helmet is flat out better than what they have now.
The UConn and Louisville helmets are interesting to me, althought I think both of those schools have
solid helmet concepts right now anyway.
The Memphis and Houston helmets are awful - as generic as you can get. But I hear Houston is looking to rebrand, anyway.
Not crazy about the one they gave us. Jesus, we have had some of the best looking uniforms ever - people have come up to me and told me they thought our helmets were the coolest in colllege football when they found out where I went to school. Why do we try to mess with it?
If anything, make the running mustang logo a little bigger to be more aggressive, and go back to the simple blue jerseys that were iconic. That's it.

Completely agree. And make the "SMU" bigger on the jersey. Yale Blue baby!! Come on, Nike!

We better create some SMU concepts and put them out on the Internet...counting on Nike to respect your school's traditions is foolhardy.
I don't have the photoshop skills

My feeling is that any jersey design they do is going to be so slap-dash and half-efforted that if something exists out there already that they can roughly copy, they'll probably do it.

Helmet will stay the same. We still call the shots.

This was the 1st thing I thought of when I heard the Nike announcement...Please, please, please, let us fall into the "leave 'em alone" Nike Uni category with Penn State.
Our Uni's are classics. Those blue helmets were awful! Best Uniforms in College Football, in my opinion (of course, I'm totally biased): #1 SMU (Blue Jerseys), #2: Penn State
Texas and Alabama would be up there - but Maroon & Burnt Orange are horrible colors (& UT just generally makes me sick)....point being, would Nike mess with those unis? No way.
Move along & play w/cougar high's logo Phil. Mustangs are set.

The red mustang on the red helmet does not work. Per the below, it looks like the pony (which must also always face to the right) can be white in one color situations.
Official SMU Athletic Logos
Visual identity plays an important role in shaping the image of the SMU Athletics Department. The logos and word marks should never be altered or animated. The SMU can be used in blue, red or white. The pony should always be red, except for one color situations, where white is acceptable. The pony should always be facing to the right.

Alabama is crimson. Maroon on the other hand is a great color, notwithstanding the fact the aggies also use it.

Good point...my bad. Probably why I don't like Maroon. Can't wait to see Ag's get whipped in the SEC.

The SMU helmut is not great, the rest I could care less. I do like the photo shop Doak Walker throw backs. I hope Nike does not mess with the traditional SMU uniform, but we might as well be prepared for some kind of combat, alternative type uniform. That is what the kids like and Nike is in this to sell jerseys and to make money

i undertsand people are set in their ways and don't want to make changes. I can respect that, and I love the fact that we have a traditional logo and uni that has a "classic" feel.
But you cannot argue that the players and recruits, young kids ages 16-22, absolutely LOVE this stuff. Laken tweeted a pic of Rashaad Samples (SMU OFFER FROM SKYLINE) at his TCU visit showing off those pro combat gloves and the TCU uniform. He was all excited and tweeted the pic himself. All he talked about.
If making these changes to our uni for one game or two leads to us geting high profile kids to commit - I am all for it 100%. It makes us relevant.
Notre Dame has possibly the most classic look out there, and even they changed it up a bit this year. Ohio St, Michigan, UF, Bama..I could go on and on. They see that it DOES make a difference in recruiting. We should recognize the same.
Adapt or die.

Does it matter? Yeah, I know, recruits care about how they look, but I am wiling to guess they care more about Oregon's AMAZING facilities then the uni's. Bama, LSU, Florida, Auburn, USC, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Ohio State have won the last what? 10 National Championships, maybe more, and they are the epitome of classic looks. So showey new uni's are worth only so much.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with change. We had to change multiple times in order to get our classic look that we got in the early 80's, so we don't have a problem with change itself. I thought Oregon's 'O' on their helmet was a lot better than their old 'OU.' The simplicity and shape of it has the potential to be iconic. But then they tried flash over actual improvement, and it is actually boring watching them parade out new uni's that don't look any better than the old ones.
Lesson: if you're going to do it, change it to make it better. Have some taste, use some descretion. There must be 100's of possibilities for designs of a mustang, or the letters SMU, or whatever. Pick a good one and make it awesome. Nike has shown they have little to no imagination when they design something, so I would think long and hard about letting them come up with a design.
