If we ever go back to men's track, I hope it is the full program not just weights and distance. Sprints and relays directly tie into our kind of football offense.

Hope you are correct. I was told point blank by a person in the program we would have a men's track team up and running (pardon the pun) within 2 years. Done deal. That was approxinmately 10 years ago. Of course we did not have the BCS AQ thing going for us then.

Your numbers must be slightly off as 10 years ago we still had a team. I would know as I was on that team! The last time we fielded a men's team was the 2003-04 season.

I understand track for men, but why softball for women? I know you have to offset scholarships, but softball seems like one of the more expensive sports to fund.

...except for about 30% of our students and alumni base. It's a great spectator sport, can play right at Ford. We have a ton of alumns and current students from the East Coast, especially the Mid Atlantic reason where it's huge. Love baseball, but we sucked for how many decades? We sure don't have a stadium anywhere near campus either.

Your timing is a little off. i'll use a current Junior that is a pretty good FG/PAT blocker who was a decent shotputter as a point of reference who started playing football when they cut the track/field team what, 3 years ago?

and yes, one of the main reasons for bringing back track is football recruiting. especially when we're trying to get burner wide receivers in here.

Margus Hunt came to SMU to train with Coach Wollman, but there was no track team when he arrived. The last edition of SMU men's track and field was 2003-04.

I'd actually prefer to watch Lax, especially if we're going to the East.

I understand that we are getting Softball and Track, but I personally prefer LAX over both of these options. It's a great sport that has a growing popularity in North Texas and the Big East is home to some very strong programs. If we did it right, we wouldn't need any new facilities and since we would be the only Division I team in Texas, I bet attendance would surprise folks as well. I think SMU is being short sighted on this, but then again I am just a poster on a fan board and not a paid official who follows the trends of college sports.

Very easily could be off on the time period. Has to have been at least 7 or so years ago however. I could have sworn it was at least 10 but at my age time goes by very quickly.

Good news Dutch. I hope they add LAX for men and women after the Softball and Track teams. Would help to be the only LAX team in Texas in Div. 1- Men. Probably a better choice than Baseball due to competition already established like Rice and Big 12 teams.

Title IX, another goverment program that sure sounds good on paper.
