Funny how that didn't stop Texas from going to UNT for their next women's basketball coach.
I'm sure it helped that Aston had previously worked at Texas, but her record at UNT was 15-16.
SMU is in a way TOTALLY different category than UT my friend Pony^...I just hope we get there someday. We can't afford to go get lowly Sunbelt Conference coaches going into the BE......Jones is a good guy and probably a good coach, but we can't take the risk.

Amazing Gail G didn't work out at UT. She dominated while at Duke and whorns threw big $ at her to hire her away. If for whatever reason Rhonda doesn't pan out in BE-and I hope she does-hopefully we make a run at Gail.

So who do we take the risk on? A lowly MAC coach or something along those lines? Because I don't think we are going to get a big name coach imo.

SMU needs to take a chance and get someone with NBA experience, NCAA tournament experience and the ability to recruit nationwide. Reggie Theus is the man!

Well Ponyscott it looks like we are headed to our second tier coaching candidates as it looks like Dan Monson has turned us down.
Kate Hairopoulos ‏ @khairopoulos
Long Beach State coach Dan Monson turned down SMU today, according to a source.

At this point Johnny Jones would be a slam dunk hire. The man has had tremendous success here in DFW. We aren't getting someone that has won in the major conferences. Where do all these big time coaches come from? Coach K, Bill Self, Roy Williams, Jim Calhoun and so on and so on, they came from shittastic schools that they were winning at. Get some one that knows how to coach, recruit and knows how to win. Who cares if they come from donkey balls university. Some of you need to get over your superiority complex when it comes to unt. The man has won there. That place was a black hole with no money at all. We are at least a black hole that has some money to throw into the program. He should be able to excel here.

Jones would be a very good hire-possibly better than some of the guys who turned us down already.

Not so fast on the Johnny Jones hire. How many of his current players would able to stay in school at SMU or even get admitted? Not many. He has gotten kids that cannot cut it at other reputable accredited schools. N. Texas is the UTEP of this area....anyone can get in and get passing grades to stay eligible. He may well be a great hire but you have to look at everything.

I am well aware of that fact and I still believe he would be the best hire at this point. We let just about anyone in these days, keeping them eligible is our problem. If it gets fixed here he would definitely excel. Plus there isn't some rule that he can only recruit idiots. The talent pool that we have to choose from is about to become much larger when we move to the Big East.

I don't disagree. I do believe he could quickly upgrade the talent on the roster. We also are overlooking the obvious - he may not want to coach here. Many others haven't.
