If the coaches are offering him now, I feel confident they're pretty sure the coaches (you know, the guys who actually have seen them play and know how to evaluate talent) are comfortable with their ability to play the game.

You mean the same guys that saw Marcus Holyfield and Deon McElroy play right? And thought they could play as well right? Just another angle to your comment, LOL.

don't think those two examples are the best ones. marcus hollifield was not an early offer, and it was pretty widely known that offering marcus was a big favor as June had a prior relationship with his dad....they took a flier bc hes an athletic kid- but make no mistake about it- that was a favor. Do i agree with offering scholarships like that? no. but I don't think Hollifield speaks to the staff's talent evaluation.

In regards to Mcelroy...wasn't he part of June's first recruiting class? They didn't exactly have their pick of the litter in terms of un committed kids. What did June have, 2-3 weeks before signing day to put together his first class? Also, I don't think any of us can comment on mcelroy's on field athletic ability considering he was kicked off the team after 1 year?

I have not seen them play, so I can not really comment on their ability.

Right. Because coaches at other schools never miss on prospects. McElroy was an academic casualty, so there's no way to know how he would have panned out in another year, and Holyfield was a stud basketball player with a world champion athlete in his family -- many coaches will take a chance on a guy like that (he was no less certain a prospect than Margus Hunt, and nobody trashes the coaches for taking a chance on him). Plus, Holyfield had a major knee injury. Who knows what he'll become, but I'm still pulling for him, and I would hope the rest of you are, too.

Because we are going to a BCS conference means we have a lot less room to miss on prospects. We also might recruiting a kid that might do fine in CUSA but not measure up in the Big East against the upper tier teams.

We could have used him this year - in moody.

Welcome to SMU Justin.

That's the word on the guy: athlete. Maybe he's a little raw and needs a lot of coaching, but it sounds like he might be a better athlete than I thought. Hope so.
