Missing on the QB spot is all a matter of reference and opinion … sort of … ones personal like/dislike for the person in question aside I guess.

Justin and Logan were here not JJ recruits … should they have been the man .. don’t know and can’t prove it one way or the other

Bo: Would not have started under normal circumstances his Freshman year … SMU was anything but normal at the time. Bo was hurt in the Houston game, replaced by a Smith/Padron rotation and then Padron. No one would argue Kyle’s success that year and the results. Bo left because he saw what we all saw that year with Kyle. He did not think he could beat him out and chose not to hang around to see, or wait his turn at the #1 spot again. JJ would have loved a capable #2 (Kyle or Bo). Bo moves on and leads his team to the 1AA national title and his senior year is the 1AA player of the year … A BUST? … he left for his own reasons .. again the QB scuffle.

Kyle: Great that first year, struggled the second … Why?? You can come up with a lot of reasons … here are a few 1) Expectations that second year from himself and for him by others and the pressure that brings 2) Teams have scouting info on him now .. makes a diff. 3) He still a young and maturing/developing QB that is still learning 4) He was hurt toward season end … etc etc.

JJMac: Comes in at A&M and does very well and goes 5-1 in his first 6 games and the big wing against TCU .. UCF at home. NO ONE can argue that move. JJMac struggles mid-season (is hurt we find out). A healthy Kyle gets back in and may be retains his #1 spot, kicks it into gear the remainder of the season and the GG conversation never takes place … we don’t know and never will. What is in Kyle’s next chapter … success I hope. But, Kyle is leaving for one main reason IMO, GG is coming … that is his choice. Competition never ends … welcome to life. Note: Kyle missed the bus from the hotel to the game at A&M, they had to come back for him … that was one reason the team busses were so late getting to the stadium … that and A&M funky rules for visiting teams. My understanding is that Kyle had that “Deer” in the headlight look about him Fri/Sat. JJ was probably watching for signs, so two picks in a short span of time, and I probably replace him for a veteran QB with a cool/clam demeanor. If JJMac struggles, Kyle is back in probably. JJ stayed with the hot hand going forward. Is Kyle a bust .. I don’t think so, but we don’t know for sure as that chapter is not closed. Again, the QB scuffle … Kyle’s choice.

GG, CP, and other coming, those pages are yet to be written. Folks much smarter than use think JJ is a cut about the rest when it comes to seeing and developing QB talent … Colt Brenham and Timmy Chang may suggest they are correct. No argument here.

IMO; the fall will determine the QB depth chart. But heading into it I think;
GG
CP
Krstich
Burchman

no need to shorten when you have something you want to say or a point to make.

Stephen Kaiser Transferring?

Strange as it may seem, the June's connections are with Samoans, and it is my understanding that the mid-cities big pacific island population are Tongans, who hate Samoans....

Acom's razor. You can write paragraphs of circumstances and explainations that you'd have to accept OR just accept one: June has not been a good QB recruiter/evaluator here at SMU.

Dan Morrison needs to assume some of the blame as well. He has been the field scout and "uncovered" some of these disappointments. June has recruited a number of Texas' QB's, but he hasn't successfully closed on any of the better ones. I could see things changing in our favor if he can successfully rehabilitate Gilbert's career. I guess he should get some credit for getting Gilbert, I am sure some other schools would have welcomed him.

Hey Guys,

Missouri State fan here. I am happy to hear about Stephen's transfer because we are in desperate need for a QB. Our starter, who was a stud, was just kicked off for violating team policy and has left us is big hole very close to the season. Stephen will have to beat out a pretty good sophomore, but other than that, he should be good to go.

Our coaching staff is in a MUST win situation this year if they are to keep their jobs so Steve will be given every opportunity to see the field.

Does anyone know if he is considered a sophomore or a junior at this point?

Best of luck to the Mustangs this year. I'm a big fan of your coaching staff and have alot of respect for your program.

No, they weren't, but I think discussion of those two are fair, especially regarding Willis, since June first started here when Willis would have been a senior, coming off of two strong offensive campaigns, and he was a QB that had a number of in-game snaps under his belt and had experience running a collegiate offense in live action (Yes, it was the Pistol offense under Rusty Burns). June was always very straight forward in saying pretty much that Willis wasn't the style, type, or build of QB that he wanted to successfully run the RnS here, so he elected to start Mitchell. So, while Willis was obviously a Bennett recruit, I think it's more than fair to at least discuss since June elected to go with a true freshman that had never taken a collegiate snap over an upperclassmen, experienced QB who held multiple offensive records at the time. Ultimately, from a record stand point, that season didn't turn out too well (1-11), and Mitchell wasn't around too much longer before Padron usurped him.

So, we could all argue from here until the end of time what, if any negative effects starting Mitchell as a true freshman had on him and the campaign, but it'd be pointless since it's all opinion anyway. We are where we are. But, for the purposes of discussing QBs that we've had come through here under June that couldn't successfully run the offense to a high degree, it's fair to include Willis because June asserted as much in electing to go with true frosh Mitchell, his recruit that de-committed from Hawai'i and followed him here over Mitchell.

There, I hope that was gentle and objective enough to avoid being bludgeoned over the head by certain parties.

He was a reshirt freshman last year so he will be a sophomore this coming season.

Your thoughts are all good with me, and a valid point with JW ... JJ may have thought I'll start w a clean slate with my guy, who did not stay his guy ... who knows .. either way, as you said "opinion". There are no bloody noses coming from me, I enjoy hearing/reading other viewpoints irrespective of mine.

I think the death knell for JW was missing that first Spring with Jones. I have forgotten why, academic problems, team rules??? Anyway, Jones seemed POed with him and it doomed Willis. Also, at the time I had no idea how complicated the R&S was for a QB to learn, which exacerbated the problem. That said, after watching the excellent interview with GG, he sounds like he is ready for the challenge and Connor/Garrett should be as well, though the "Spring Game" didn't inspire confidence. Line and Johnson with GG give me hope the offense will be better than last year. We fans are all nervous about what should be THE year, but that doesn't mean writing the team off before the Baylor game has been played.
