Relevancy comes step by step. If you can't see what progress we have made and enjoy the journey then you need to follow one of the programs that is always at the top.

I think we should all should have learned something from this basketball search, you can throw all the money on the problem, but coaches won't come here. They don't trust our administration and don't feel we are flexible enough in our academics. June has moved us forward a long way from where we were, but a top head coach and his staff still wouldn't take a career risk here. It will take a few more years of pressure, money and understanding by the parties involved to get there. We still are a university that "eats its young", just as we did with Orisini.

Its more than fair to criticize when it is warranted, but endless mocking and ridicule doesn't help the program. I realize many of you belong to a generation of "instant gratification", but progress comes at a measured pace, not something that can be instantly acquired by your parents for you or you can buy now pay later.

Enjoy the journey.

You should have told that to the boosters during the Pony Excess years.

Hard to enjoy a journey that has you headed over a cliff. The good news is that June wants out so our biggest impediment to relevancy might get taken off our hands. We'll see about luring a new coach, I think we have a much better product to sell than you think just the wrong guy selling it. If you really think losing June would be some kind of death sentence for the program then go ahead and follow him to his next stop.

You honestly think June Jones is our biggest impediment to relevancy? I do not claim the man walks on water, but I think you might be leaving out some other issues. I will just start with a small and relatively disinterested fan base, but I am sure others can add to the list.

I disagree with everything you say. Usually.

In this case, I think you're spot on, GC.

The fanbase is small and disinterested because SMU isn't winning. Win and people will come, of course that'll be harder in the new conference and June's pedestrian recruiting won't help matters. Add whatever you want to the list, June will still be at the top.

Oh how I miss Ponyfans. Here's a prediction our attendance numbers will be up this year. Aggies buy as many season tickets as necessary to get get into the game that will be sold out. Empty seat galore the rest of the season. And for the record, BETTERHALF and I are buying 10 more season tickets. All for TCU AND A&M game. If anyone needs tickets to other games I will have them.

Not nearly enough smilies in his posts to approach Travis Bickle's level.

then the problem is that SMU fans don't follow college football and don't recognize teams outside of the Big XII. UCF came in as defending CUSA Champs after beating us in Orlando the year before and then going on to beat Georgia, becoming the 1st CUSA team to win the Liberty Bowl game since SMU joined the conference...and we have the usual "Rice-like" turnout. That's what started all the attendance discussion and probably had JJ thinking he's taken this program as far as he can. This is a pivotal year for SMU. Best home schedule we've had since our SWC days. Time for SMU and Dallas to step up in support of this program.

It's also time for June and his team to step up their on-field performance. Start 6-0 with wins over 2 Big 12 teams and an SEC team from the state of Texas and SMU will be ranked and getting plenty of regional and national publicity (the type of buzz needed to attract indifferent alums and casual fans). We have to give people a reason to come to games to see us, we're never going to get anywhere depending on the fans of road teams to sell out our stadium. Those last 4 home games will tell us a lot about how far this team and this fanbase have come.

And let's do some REAL marketing all over Dallas. We must find a way to get the casual fans to experience the Boulevard and the Stadium. Free Del-tacos, inside at the scoreboard, for those with tickets in the end zone seats?

I have been around SMU for decades during good, bad, and mediocre times.. Look at where we are post Phil Bennett as opposed to where we are today. PB left a program in tatters. Not all his fault by any means, but Jones started with nothing and a program that was ignored by the national media. Get over the ASU mess, buy tickets and invite your friends and neighbors to the blvd and the games, and lets fill the seats with our fans and have fun. Neither your nor I have control over who fills the head coaching position so either support the program or dont.

I'm not the problem, nor are any of the people going to the games. I've done all I can do to get people to Ford (no small task considering how unimpressive the product has been), the ball is in June's court now. Either start winning big and make people take notice or don't be surprised when attendance continues to be poor. If June still can't wrap his head around what needs to be done to fill Ford then I suspect him and Steinberg will be looking for a new landing spot in December.
