you guys read way too much into everything.

Before the season started, all of our players were saying that if we just made it past baylor, we could run the table.

Then, it was, we still have a chance to go undefeated in conference and win the league in our last season.

The goals that are stated internally are much more aggressive than those stated externally. The coaching staff is just trying to keep the players from putting too much pressure on themselves. Internally, they want to go 4-4 and win the conference. Externally, instead of saying win the conference or bust (which is why teams go on downward slides), he is saying that at minimum, we want to win 3 of 4 and go to a nice bowl.

From day 1 he has always stated lower/realistic goals to the press while the rest of the team talks about running the table. This will be restated in every player interview this week. None of the players are going to say win 3 of 4, they will all talk about winning out.

Their goal is obviously not to ONLY win 3 out of 4 games - the goal is, and has been, to win a conference championship.

That being said, they've also been saying their goal is to be in Hawaii on Christmas Eve. These two goals are NOT mutually exclusive (see So. Miss. last year). This seems to be the situation and I don't think we can harp on JJ for this one - one could argue that the Hawaii Bowl receives just as much if not more attention than the Liberty Bowl (depending on opponent of course). This is clearly more rewarding than a trip to Memphis, and to be honest, I can't envision ANYONE here complaining if we end up C-USA Champions and headed to the Hawaii Bowl after the start to the season that we've had.

These seniors began their SMU careers with a Hawaii Bowl berth. To end it there would be special -especially as C-USA champions.

Keep it all in perspective and let's try to stay positive - we're finally starting to "do what we do."

Southern Miss went there last year because the Liberty Bowl chose to get a Big East team instead (making that their choice last November), which is their option when the SEC is running short on bowl-eligible teams (because the SEC would rather play Liberty Bowl than BBVA Compass Bowl but would rather play Big East than CUSA)

When the Liberty Bowl chooses to take a Big East team, the CUSA champion may choose any other CUSA affiliated bowl or the BBVA Compass Bowl, in which CUSA will take the SEC's berth (which is what SMU did when we played Pitt).

I agree with this, but I refuse to let it get in the way of my emotional need to slam June Jones.

If our coach is going to openly state our goals are less the the maximum that can be achieved then I want him gone. When he talks to the press he is speaking to the fan base. If he wants to appease his players he can do that behind closed doors.

This is total bullsh-t. He sets the bar low so that if we underachieve, it looks like he is happy with the progress and exactly where we should be.

loser mentality. we need someone to dream big and have high expectations for this program. tired of his nonchalant BS attitude.

You seriously want us to believe that this is the genius of JJ---state lower expectations to the general public through the media? So much for the marketing scheme of being Dallas' team. What we are inviting Dallas to do is back a group with low expectations (that's what June said in the media by not setting his sites higher than the Hawaii Bowl). What an idiot---June STOP TALKING! He only perpetuates what an embarrassment he is to the University.

JJ also said that these next two years (2012-2013) would be "down years" and we'd be lucky to go bowling because we graduated so much talent. We should start listening to JJ. All he does is set low expectations, put seemingly no effort into achieving them and yet he always meets his goals. Remarkable. All day, e'ry day.

a far cry from the "we are 1-1/2 recruiting classes from competing for a BCS bowl bid" we heard the year we played for the CUSA title. I guess he thought kids would be contacting us begging to come play for him

The Hawaii Bowl might be fun for the players, but it is a logistical pain in the @$$ to get to and being at Christmas a very unpopular thing with the family.

I'd much prefer a game that is easier for our fans to support.

What did you expect from a Jones apologist. Glad you called it what it actually is.

"Recruiting class and a half away" from '09 became "we are not there yet" this pre-season on nat'l sports radio.

Anyway, i agree. Just say win the division/conference. Lets hope they stop for Krispy Kreme next Sat.

just a random thought as I watch the Pokes underperform as well-

June left Hawaii at the zenith of his glory, largely over an AD and regents that refused to build on a winning program and spend a minimum of money. He has openly stated that he would go back after his carreer is over. Hawaii fans (at least a portion of them) have pined for the days that they were relevant in the national picture, aka the Jones years.

What about the scenario where JJ gets the chance to go back to Hawaii for the bowl with SMU, and gets the opportunity to deal a pound of flesh to those that were unwilling to fund the program sufficiently?

no conspiracy theories here, just a scattershooting thought following a satisfying win, and a confusing HC's quote...

it's not like these guys get an abundance of support during the season, so it's really not about what's best for our fans. It's disappointing for the hard core loyalists who can't afford to make the Hawaii trip, but those same folks are among the most understanding and appreciate of our players so no big deal as far as I am concerned
