The class is not overly talented anyway. If you keep Mason he will keep the same non recruiting asst coaches because he has a relationship with them.Junior wrote:do we really need to turn over the entire staff? if we do, we run the risk of having absolutely no talent in our incoming class. why don't we turn the team over to mason and let JP run the offense?

We can't promote from within just to salvage a mediocre recruiting class (that the assistants bear some responsibility for). If you like these recruits then take solace in the fact that most of them aren't going anywhere because it's either us or 1-AA ball.

Not sure mason would keep his staff. Remember, he was not one of JJ's boys. He was selected after jj struck out on about 4-5 other DCs.

Here is a list of candidates that Kentucky seems to have.

I still don't think an assistant, even a high profile assistant is the way to go. There are still battles that have to be waged against the administration. With a relative newbie at AD, the bball and football coaches have to be negotiating from a position of strength. Promoting an assistant won't get it done, and grabbing an assistant at a BCS school won't get it done. Need to think about experienced coaches. As much as I really like the prospect of Sonny Dykes, I think he might not be experienced enough to handle the situation.
Petrino would use us faster than the assistant. We would have to have a second person lined up after 1-2 years. But if we signed him to a 5 year deal, the buyout when someone steals him might pay for the next coach.
An interesting name to throw out there is Dan Hawkins. He was in a miserable situation at Colorado and really was the person who built the Boise program.

A rule of thumb during these searches is to avoid guys who ran programs into the ground.
