Basically their argument amounts to Miami having an awesome run while in the Big East makes the ACC a power conference. Can't make that kind of logic up.

@slmandel It wasn't about a 7th bowl. It was about a guaranteed spot. It is better for everyone if there are 6 bowls. Mission accomplished!
"@slmandel: Official announcement shortly, BCS 2.0 will be 6 bowls, with guaranteed spot for highest Big East/non-AQ"

So if there are 12 spots then 60+ teams have access to one spot. For the 11 other spots is there any other access? For example, if Boise is ranked 5 and U of Louisville is ranked 7 then BSU gets in automatically but will U of L be out?
Does cartel 5 get all other 11 spots?

I looked at the BCS standings and noticed that the SEC has basically 4-10 locked up. The BIG Ten has none in top 10. ACC has #11. The PAC 10 has #2 and Stanford. The Big XII has K State at the top and UT, OU and TT in the second 10. BE has Louisville in Top 20. Not sure how the ACC points out above the BE.

So basically we are no better off other than a little extra money and some better hoops??

should be easier to be ranked higher in the big east than cusa, assuming the team has a similar record in each.

This is a better situation than before - one, the added TV money from the Big East, and two, the fact that we are now guaranteed access to a major bowl as the top ranked team in the "group of five".
It sucks being one of 60+ rather than one of 10-14, but come on - most of those teams in the 60 are not going to be competitive for the spots...reel off an 11-12 win season and you've got a legit shot at a real bowl vs now really having to push it and hope you get inside the top 14 (or whatever it is).
We screwed around for 20+ years, put nothing into football or basketball until 2008, have an alumni base where 70%+ don't give a damn about SMU athletics, and yet we still have a chance to get decent TV money and make it to a big time bowl game with a great season in a fairly average conference.
I know this is Ponyfans and we can always find something to complain about, but how is this anything worse than we deserve at this point? Let's go win the Big East a few times and then complain about it...for now, we should be happy to even have a shot.

Although this does essentially make the Big East a "mid major" again...

Better to have some access in a 6 bowl system than some access in a 7 bowl system. Oh well, at least we'll be getting paid much more than CUSA and will have better competition (especially in non-football sports).

When TCU backs out of joining, you are already a mid major.

More like it definitively makes the Big East a mid major again.

"No fans should be happier today than those in Cincinnati, Louisville, Boise and the rest of the Big East. The conference might not be one of the cool kids any longer, but it still has an invite to the party."
The top Big East Champion is the likely beneficiary, so we should be pleased. If we rise to the top in the BE, which should be better than the remaining four conferences of the 'Group of Five', we go to a big bowl.
Given our journey in the desert for the last twenty five years, SMU will now be paired with the strongest competition not part of the top five. As someone said earlier, it is unrealistic for us or our new BE conference mates to have expected more than this agreement.
Lastly, we are likely to have to additional bonus points.
- First, less or no more raiding of the BE FB membership is likely.
- Second, BYU should want to join the BE now. Otherwise, they will never qualify. Same for Army and to a lesser degree Air Force, who is aligned in lower probably conference, MWC.

Huge nugget to lure BYU to the Big East!
