Such a sad comment but so true.
I was in school from 2002-2005. We were barely bowl eligible if you count all 4 years. Nothing about the last 4 years is sad. Nothing except the fan support has really let this team and coach down
Our record against opponents with winning records is pretty sad, June's mediocre offense and complete disinterest in recruiting is pretty sad too.

Good thing rice has a losing record. We might be able to win.

Were you at the Baylor game this year? There was a large crowd from SMU attending he game. Expectations were high, then Baylor gives SMU a beat down. Same with A&M. Please do not blame the fans, they are not the ones coaching or recruiting.

See your one of those people I listed in a post don't [deleted] about fan attendance if we don't schedule hard games and actually beat people with BCS link and have a winning record. Remember we lost to Baylor bad and they have a losing record. So yeah we aren't going to get fans, this is a pretty easy concept. The good thing is your [deleted] isn't hurting anyone since no one is here to care.

Yes but I'm hoping we have at 2011 win over tcu kind of moment. That win us worth more than 5 cupcake wins.

So is the message to the next coach that you have to go to three BCS bowls if you want significant fan support?

Well, we've tried the no bowl and nonBCS bowl route..
Championships and/or top tier bowls if we want to buck the trend
we did what we did

Yeah, that kind of is the message to the next guy, or at the very least he needs to be someone willing to do what it takes to make our guys able to compete at the BCS level. I swear people around here still think we are staying in CUSA; like it or not, the Big East is a BIG competition increase for us, and JJ does not seem prepared to get us ready for it. LB knew the second he walked in the door that his #1 job had to be getting ready to play elite basketball. The next guy in football has to have the same mentality. Dallas does not get behind mediocre: ask the Stars, Mavs, Rangers what their attendance looked like before they figured out how to win. Slightly above .500 and sweating a team as uninterested in winning as Rice doesn't get it done, and the whole "well, remember where we were" argument, while valid, is getting stale now. The kids now don't give a [Fatterson] where we were, and neither do most fans; they want to know what we are doing to move ahead on facilities, recruiting, community support, etc. to be able to compete at a high level. If you dream Sun Belt dreams, you get Sun Belt results.

Yes, playing for a 4th straight worthless bowl makes one nostalgic for the good ole days of 1-11 or 0-11 teams. Back when insignificant bowls were not an issue for our insignificant teams.
Boy, do you guys/gals remember when we almost made an insignificant bowl Caven’s first year? All we had to do was beat a winless TCU team to go 6-5 but instead we got our arses handed to us and a 5-6 season was the result. Thank goodness we lost so we didn’t have to suffer through an insignificant bowl. I know the pride I felt after tha game knowing we dodged an insignificant bowl bullet.
How one longs for those days when our pathetic offense (just like JJ’s now) couldn’t beat teams with losing records as well as teams with winning records. Dang one misses that level of consistency!
Remember when 4/5 star athletes didn’t consider transfer here? Thank goodness cause back then we relied on rock band members and intramural QBs to push us towards utter futility. High caliber athletes transfer back then might have pushed us into an insignificant bowl.
Ah, those good ole days. How one longs for them.
But for now, I love winning, man. It’s like better than losing.

Winning is great and I don't begrudge you that nor do I want to go back to 1-10 etc.
Yes we can keep adding to our bowl streak and those of us who are here year in and year out will enjoy it. In order to capture the imagination of a broader audience and expand to beyond 16000 for homecoming, or 15000 vs the reigning conference champs the week after the biggest road win in recent history, I believe it will take more than what we've seen.
we did what we did

I agree the Big East is a step up, but maybe not as big of a step up as you claim.
If the next coach records 6-6, 7-5 seasons in a league tougher than CUSA, is that sufficient improvement? Or are 11-1, 10-2 seasons required, regardless of the level of competition?

Don't get me wrong, ponyte, minor bowls are a whole lot better than the days when mentioning SMU and bowl game in the same sentence was laughable, and I sure as heck love the fact that I at least have a reason to pay attention to bowl season now. But, do you honestly think our attendance issues get solved if we can't get past 6-6 or 7-5? More to the point, do you think it is possible to even stay at that level with the conference move given where we are today? I don't, and I'm not sure what it takes to get JJ or whoever comes next to get us there, but that is why we have an AD and he damned well better figure it out in a hurry. I don't expect this team to play for a National Championship within the next couple years, but I do expect them to be able to at least hang with the Baylors and Rutgers and Boise States of the world (especially since two of those three are in our conference from here on out) and this year we didn't come close. It's a good problem to have; we're a solid program looking to be a great program. Question is, can JJ get us there, and if not, let's find someone who can.

Who said anything about a BCS bowl? Do I think that should be the ultimate goal? Obviously. But we haven't even experienced a nine win season. We haven't experienced a 10 win season. Heck, we haven't even won a conference championship in this terrible conference of ours.
I don't get why there's this disconnect between realizing that this is not the best we can be between the June haters and the June supporters. We're all thankful for what he has done. But we've stalled, and we're declining going into a tougher conference. I don't expect any coach to get SMU to a BCS bowl. I'd love it, but we'd have to have a stellar regular season. Obviously the playoff situation is going to change our chances, but we'd still have to run the table. We haven't even made it three games into a season under June without a loss. We haven't even been able to compete with a middle of the pack BCS program outside of one game vs Texas Tech, and we were still down considerably in that game before we came back. This program needs to continue to move forward if you ever want to have a bigger fan base. You're not trying to grab the fans that are already here...you're trying to grab Dallas's attention. A 5-5, a 7-5, a 8-5 record is not going to do that. Winning conference championships will do that. Trying to just get to Hawai'i will not do that.
