I pretty much agree with WestexSMU. To recruit well we must have a winning tradition. We were bad for so long that recruiting is very difficult particularly in Texas. That said a more aggressive approach might be in order.

Nonetheless, picking up players like GG & Sanders Jr is bound to catch the attention of others & is a positive sign for.the future.

jpe- this is kind of like the 'chicken and egg issue'. We can't really build a winning tradition without good recruits and good recruits don't want to come here because we don't have a winning tradition.
We really need to get a 'hot' high profile coach and a staff that will bust butt on the recruiting trail and start pushing this program to higher levels.

+1. And the only way that can happen is if you don't lose to inferior teams like rice and Tulane and you actually build some winning tradition

I don't see where WestexSMU said that you must have a winning tradition and I disagree with your interpretation of it. SMU has gone to 3 bowl games in a row and the recruiting has digressed. It is all about getting out on the recruiting trail and building relationships with the high school coaches not just evaluating film and offering a recruiting (ie Johnny Manziel and many others). You have to keep in contact with recruits. Pro coaches in college tend to want to just coach up players as opposed to getting good athletes and coaching them up even better. That is why most pro coaches do not do well in college.

Rebel - I only said I agree with WestexsMU. I didn't try to interpret him or regurgitate his thoughts, etc. Also I did comment we needed to be more aggressive. It sounds like you agree with me.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. I just hope they get better at it.

In the pros, you don't recruit players, you buy them...you study film and decide how much you want to offer them. In Hawaii, you are the only show in town and the "recruits" come looking for you. In Texas, you have to go out and fight for your recruits...convince them you are the right choice and don't let them have the chance to change their minds before they sign. Evidently when you have been a pro coach and a Hawaii coach, it is really hard to become a Texas coach.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

To easily sum it up, June isn't a fit here.

jj could actually fit here if he just had a young staff of coaches who could/would recruit the hell outa TX. and build relationships with the h.s. coaches. He might also want to upgrade his offense to make it a bit more modern and competitive.

ding,ding- what's that ? Oh my alarm just went off. At least it was a positive dream.

And I don't recall you asking why he and his staff are too lazy to actually try and recruit the same kids. Why didn't you speak up? People beat it to death here - you had a chance to be the hero. Speak up when you have a forum.

westexSMU wrote:SMU does offer many of the Best Recruits, but none of them accept. We offered Johnny Manziel as an example. This doesn't mean we can't do a better job recruiting because we could, but SMU also lost Dee Paul because of what he described as SMUs poor attendance. I have been saying for years that SMU people need to understand that they have got to put money into improving our fan base and going to work at it in order to build a quality program.

Out of curiousity, what position did we offer Manziel? Per the article that was posted in the recruiting section only 2 schools wanted him as a QB, Rice and A&M.

He was an Oregon commit before he switched to A&M.
