2003 WAC Basketball Recruiting Overview

Re: 2003 WAC Basketball Recruiting Overview
I believe this sums it up....SMU has made the choice not to compete in Divsion 1 athletics. This is obvious. SMU'S attendance figures in mens football and basketball are a joke and reflect the student and alumni's disgust with SMU. SMU is now getting out recruited by North Texas and every other Division 1 university in Texas. SMU will soon be forced out of Division 1. Everyone from President Turner to the people that run the Mustang Club are incompetent when it comes to running a Division 1 athletic program. The attendance, win/loss records, and lack of post season play for over a decade make my point. The end.

Bingo, was his name-oOriginally posted by EastStang:
I think the main hang up is now transferable hours. Without a PE/Kinseology major, we can't get many juco transfers. I understand how an Ag major wouldn't be able to transfer his Animal husbandry classes, that's what A&M is for, and he wouldn't want to come here because we don't have fertilizing classes, just professors who sometimes spew fertilizer.

Hold on, Johnny. I understand your frustration, but did we not outrecruit every non BCS team in Division I football last year?

No-there is no recruiting source I know of that claims we did.

Tijanni, Rich, Bracey, Bliss, Brown, Patterson, Wilson, Upshaw, Dorner, Chambers. [/QUOTE]Originally posted by The CPC:
With the exception of Wilson (and to a lesser degree Rich), that's a remarkably pedestrian group. Nice guys, hard workers (in most cases) but guys who never did a great deal. Whether that was Shumate's coaching or their ability that held them back is hard to say.
Re: 2003 WAC Basketball Recruiting Overview
Approximately 45% of K States players are JUCOs. The best athletes who have decent grades sign with D-1 schools. JUCO's are a way to get around academic standards and for those who can't get D-1 offers from schools they want to go to. What puts SMU at the huge disadvantage is that by recruiting JUCO's, you never have a young team. There is a world of difference in a 20-21 year old and a 18 year old especially after working hard with weights and gaining playing time for 2 additional years. Guys who were not D-1 prospects become D-1 prospects when compared to true freshmen. When you can't even compete for them to fill holes or occasional needs, you are at a distinct disadvantage. You may not win the national championship with a heavy load of JUCO's(on occasion someone gets close) but you'll never be bad either. The coaches may not try to recruit JUCO's. After beating your head against a wall for a long time, it feels good to quit. I hope the NFL allows for signing sub 20 year olds (and they are sure to lose their lawsuit) so that some of the disadvantage will go away but even then, those who have programs which cater to these guys will contnue to have a physical advantage. We could adopt a strategy to hold scholarships and try to group them where we'll be good every 5 years and pathetic in between(:

Stallion,
While I appreciate your informed commentary on the recruiting world and your deep understanding of both the history and the current state of SMU athletics, I simply must reiterate this point. You are a tireless a$s in need of a serious re-examination of your purpose here on earth. There, now I feel better.
I think it's pretty clear that we did well in recruiting last year. And that there is ample room for improvement on the JC front, a concern that is at least partially being address by our apparent wooing of some JC talent (at least at the QB position). Disagree?

You posted inaccurate information that has a tendency to be repeated for years around here-just clearing up the record. REPEAT:No source has the SMU recruiting class rated No. 1 among all non-BCS schools.

That's fair and I appreciate your holding me to task, Stallion.
Point to Johnny Rock, then. We did well in recruiting last year. We look to do well this year. So, Johnny, understandable frustrations aside, you are wrong on that point.
