Well my firsthand experience has been completely different. I have never had any problems in 3rd ward, my roommates are awesome, I'm having an awesome experience and the way these dining halls are crowded, it's hard to believe its a "commuter school" but then again, we do have over 40,000 students so...
Also, all of these athletes still come here even though a lot of them have offers from all over the country, I got admitted to quite a few schools and still had a number of choices when I transferred out of UNT but there's just something about UH I liked more than the other campuses I visited.

If you were interested in SMU, I'm sure the admissions office would have put you in touch with some minority students for you to question. Further, it's hard to believe that you could not get to Dallas if you were interested in SMU, especially if you were at UNT. [/quote]
I didn't visit UNT either. I told you I was poor when I was in high school. The only reason I even saw UH and A&M when I was in HS was because they were school sponsored trips.

I have degrees from both SMU and UH. Yea me. I have no affinity for UH at all. The place is a pit and a commuter school and in a crappy location. After dark, uh is a ghost town. I was unimpressed with the undergrads I met and with the uh graduates in law school with me. I have no data to support this but I bet the percentage of uh grads that drop out of uh law school is higher than other schools.
I recently went to NTSU for a lecture and left relatively impressed (I had low expectations); at least it actually looks like a college with students that live on or near campus.

Yet, the school is getting more and more applicants each year.

Cooger High's biggest problem is the perception that is a commuter school with little in the way of a permanent student body. While UT, TAMU and TT get people who transfer in and transfer out, they are primarily 4 year schools with "real" student bodies. In contrast, UH is viewed as a commuter school that caters to people who take alternative paths to their degrees.
- People start at other schools and finish at UH.
- People start at UT and finish at other schools.
Thus, UH is not viewed as a "real" undergraduate school by the other 4 year schools.

It's no problem. As long as we 47 percenters keep winning elections, I'm content.

Please tell me that 6-year rate isn't correct. That is pitiful.
I am a believer that one qualification for playing NCAA Division 1 sports should be having a 6-year graduation rate of greater than 50%. I believe that doing so would force universities to spend resources on increasing academics and retention rates, instead of sports. 50% shouldn't be that hard to achieve.

Doesn't that become a big incentive for grade inflation? The example is high schools nationwide where all you really have to do is show up to graduate to keep the drop our rate low.

Maybe, maybe not. College professors aren't held responsible for their students' performance like high school teachers are, so they have more freedom to grade how they feel. Since the paradigm for measuring the effectiveness of a professor will never shift away from research productivity, the pressure a university administration may feel to have a Division I sports program will not result in the same micromanagement of professors that we see with high schools and teachers.

That 6 year graduation rate is probably correct. BUT, for commuter schools, that number is probably about where it should be. Their numbers don't compare directly to traditional 4year schools.
1) They have a lot of students who transfer to other schools. If you live in Houston, you can stay at home, attend UH for a couple of years, transfer to a UT/TAMU/private system school, and save a lot of money.
2) They have a significant number of students who collect credits at UH on a part time basis and/or drop out for a while before restarting again. If a student drops out to join the military for a while, I don't consider it a failure.
Louisville, Memphis and Cincinnati have similar stats for similar reasons.

Dear Coug:
Don't get your panties (if you wear any) in a bunch. We just disdain The University of Huh's student make up equally. It is thought your student body (known as the 47%), should get their GED from your community college, get an Obama phone, EBT card, subsidized housing, and other handouts; and let SMU's aspirin type students (we're white and we work) pay for your lifestyle.

Agree with the probable reasons. All the more reason for them to not be in Division 1
