I may be imagining things, but I seem to recall having a better ranking on the UPI poll going into the bowl.
Even if SMU didn't get it, I wish that the NCAA could have taken Perv State's title from that year. Sandusky was the DC at the time and St Joe turned out to be a fraud.

I don't think the NCAA could take the NC away from PState since they do not give out a championship. They won they [deleted] Press vote. Didn't we win some obscure poll? We still got screwed and it was cause of Paterno and the rest of the country's hate of the SWC.

I can't find them online, but according to my encyclopedia, we were also 4th in UPI pre-bowl.

I can't find them online, but according to my encyclopedia, we were also 4th in UPI pre-bowl.
If true, I don't know why we would have jumped Nebraska. I am pretty sure that they won the Orange Bowl.

They did, but I guess the fact that we beat #6 Pitt was more impressive to the voters than their win over a lower ranked team. I can't explain it.

all I know is that we put something like 14 guys in the NFL from that team; they were pretty good
