Was Fresno the WAC team that took nonqualifiers back in the day? I seem to vaguely remember some discussions on that point.

Yes. Back in the day Pat Hill had that program rolling. He had the motto "We will play anybody, anywhere," and they did. I just looked it up, they went to 11 bowls in 12 years, 1999 to 2010. Also, it says they've beaten 17 BCS conference schools, which is the most ever from a non-BCS school.

...and all that and they still fired Hill

I think he always walked a fine line when it came to recruiting.....probably finally caught up to him.

They serve beer at their stadium. Those fans in the Valley get rowdy.

For the record, Fresno State thankfully no longer serves alcohol, except in the luxury suites. It is a better environment. My wife is a Fresno State alum and I am a die hard Mustang. Will make for an interesting Christmas Eve. I'm inviting our friends to stop by because I'm not going anywhere. Now if the right SMU team will show up this could be interesting, otherwise the article may not be far from wrong. This has been a disappointing season.

at one time they signed about 25 non-qualifiers over a 4 year period. BTW the definition of non-qualifiers is different these days but they were well well outside the norm. When their Basketball team got on probation the President made a commitment to no-longer sign nonqualifiers so it tapered off and Pat Hill's program began its descent. They really had to make those changes because in a world of realignment nobody wants to compete against a school using JUCO standards. Their former academic standards = Blackball

So that explains why LANE KIFFIN is play call challenged!

My lasting memory of David Carr will always be when he threw an INT to Kevin Garrett and getting run over by KG as he tried to save the touchdown (which he was unable to do). If the article is right and Derek isn't as good as his big brother, I'm going with the Ponies to cover and maybe win outright.
