Backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team!

I think our QB position is as established as it has been in some time. As long as GG's development continues there should be no QB controversy next yr.

Even if that's the case, June will start Gilbert anyway. He likes to give his starters plenty of rope. Besides next year's schedule isn't really fit to indoctrinate a freshman.

Out of curiosity, we have one group insinuating that JJ is loyal to a fault with the QBs and sticks with them too long, and rip on him for sticking with GG last year.

Then we have another who are pissed that JJ made changes on BLM and KP and ran them off.

Often, people are members of both groups.

So, which is it? :)

I have actually seen some progress with GG - he has cut down on his turnovers and is starting to run a bit when the play breaks down - yes, the offense still needs much improvement but the o-line has played average at best this season - the receivers have also been average....lots of dropped balls......GG is the starter next year and will be much better.....I don't think it matters who is playing qb though.....we have A&M, Baylor, Tx Tech and TCU non-conference.....pretty brutal to start the season....thanks AD Dept. for the great scheduling.

I'm gonna take a different stance. I'm putting this one all on the receivers. While good QBs are able to throw WRs open, it's not ideal to have to do it on every play. I understand we all see GG overthrow the deep ball quite often, but more often than not the WRs are not getting the seperation they need.

I think GG is a fine QB, it's our lack of WR talent that is causing a lack of production.

Make it stop.

Gilbert was quite good during the second half of the season. He has much better mobility than I ever expected and he has protected the ball. If we had WR's who could get separation and oh I don't know...CATCH THE F'ING BALL, Gilbert's numbers would be very good.

These extra bowl practices, offseason workouts, spring ball, summer workouts, and fall camp will give us the most experienced and battle-tested QB we've had at SMU since God knows when.

Preston/Burcham/Cassel are not ready and shouldnt even be mentioned as starting.

GG will not play again after throwing 2 picks in the first quarter of our opener.

This depends on if he misses the team bus or not.....

Didn't Connor Preston graduate early from high school and this will be his 3rd spring practice at SMU? Interesting how a freshman QB playing in a brand new offense seems to be able to grasp enough of it that he can win the Heisman trophy in the toughest league in the country while at SMU, it takes several years for a QB to learn an offense..........

Not to upset your SMU-bashing, but Manziel is in his second year, has an outstanding offensive line with two veteran tackles who have a chance to be first-round draft picks, a slew of gifted receivers who didn't have the drops that our receivers dealt with at times and the freedom and athleticism to improvise a lot. That's not Gilbert's or Preston's or Burcham's (I assume) style, and that's not what this offense is. Manziel is a rare athlete who caught lightning in a bottle by playing on a very good team in a magical year and benefitted greatly from the fact that his team beat some high-profile teams. He didn't beat those teams - the team did.

Doesn't really help that June is trying to run his offense with spare parts. Given our personnel we'd be a lot more effective running a spread option.
