Because Mason is one of our top recruiters now. If we lose him who do we replace him with? That would mean Hill and Phillips will have to carry even more of a load recruiting.

Interesting - Mason already tried to leave. So now we know 100% of non-geriatric assistant coaches tried to leave June last year.

He went for a head coaching job, it's not like he was willing to take any job just to leave. He's done a great job, and if he gets a head coaching job with Nevada or elsewhere, I'll be really happy for him. I'll never get mad at a coach for accepting a promotion. Remember, he was the linebackers coach at Fresno State when we got him and most of us were scratching our heads over his hiring. I'll be really happy for him if he gets a head coaching job, whether it be at Nevada, SMU, or anywhere.

You can't blame a guy for looking when a head coaching gig is put before him. He has a lot of ties out west, and has been at Nevada and Fresno State before, so to look at the head coaching position at either place is a natural chain of events.
I'll be disappointed if he gets it, but at the same time, he has done a wonderful job at SMU and deserves everything that comes his way.
Hopefully the fact that his daughter is a student at SMU will factor in to his decision to stay. PLEASE STAY, COACH MASON!

I don't blame him one bit - just pointing out all non-bluehairs tried to leave around the time of ASU. Mason just didn't land what he wanted but still an ominous sign

Its his alma mater. If offered he'll go. I really don't think he'll get the job

McMackin would be the smart choice for June as they have worked together very well. June won his ONLY 2 conference titles with McMackin as his DC.
He was also the Big-12 recruiter of the year while at TT.

If Mason is talking to the paper, it means he isn't a target and is trying to angle his way in. Smart, but unlikely to be successful. Frankly, he would be smart to move on given the talent he is losing. And you don't turn down a head coaching job to stay an assistant at a mid-major.

Mason said he loved coaching with the Pack in 1999 when Ault was the athletic director.

I much prefer the pistol to the run and shoot," Mason said. "You have so many more options with the pistol, with the downhill running game. There's been some talk that when June leaves SMU, I'd be the guy to take over and I've told everyone that I would run the pistol. "The pistol gives you the dive option, the speed option, everything. You can also run some of the same passing concepts in the pistol that you have in the run and shoot. But you have so many more things you can go to in the pistol as compared to the run and shoot."
JJ should like that quote. Seems to be a slight insult.
"Reno and Boise are similar type cities," he said. "The key to their success, I believe is due to that community getting behind that football program. Those fans came out to all our games, whether we were winning or losing. They might leave early if we were losing but they'd always show up again the next game. Getting the community behind your football program is a huge key to building a successful program. And I know it can happen in Reno."
A mild slam to the SMU community?
Mason must have taken a page from June's book on public relations. I understand this is part of the coaching game but give me a break. Try to be a little more diplomatic.

Saw Mason and his wife at the Furman game Sunday afternoon. He seldom misses a home game. Big supporter of SMU. Would hate to lose him but you can't argue with an opportunity to be the boss and a huge bump in $$.
