You need those big UGLIES up front to win games. Think about the NFL, the teams with great powerful and long term offensive and defensive lines stay near the top while the others never seem to stay or get there. If you have five All-American linemen, you can bet you'll have a Heisman trophy winner in the backfield. You have five shrimps on the line, you can bet even the best talent will look mediocre.

Q,

Just to set the record straight, Turner is NOT a big lineman. He's the small, scrappy type who fights tenaciously and wears defenders down (not a bad characteristic for a center). But he's not the type to blow people off the line of scrimmage. PonyFans lists him at 6'2 285, but he's shorter than that. He may have been 285 before showing up for summer workouts, but I bet he'll be closer to 275 after all the heat and running.

Boren and Peveto are both big kids with big frames. Both prototype BUS players.

Burley (already big) has the frame to become a monster. Wait until Faucette has him for a couple of years!!

If Bryan Turner - listed in the Recruiting Roundup at 6-2, 285 - is the smallest of the new linemen, then that's a great influx of size for the team.

He may be short, but I believe he was pursued and offered by TCU at least, IIRC.

According to the ponyfans.com Recruiting Roundup, he had offers from Houston and Memphis, and interest from Alabama, Rice, New Mexico, Missouri, Iowa State and Georgia Tech

...apparently this Andrew McKinney was getting some strong recruiting interest from OU. He was spotlighted by James Hale of the OU Insiders as a pretty good prospect. OU was looking at him as an H-Back while the rest are usually looking at him at FB or RB. McKinney said the strongest interest he received during recruiting was from OU and apparently received a personal visit(during evaluation period?) from Cale Gundy of OU. He also received interest from Neb, Tech, Oklahoma St, Rice and Army. He participated in at least 5 events in track including long jump(21-7), Triple Jump (42.10), 400, 200 and the relays. He was a unanimous All-Conference player as a junior. His long jump and triple jump numbers are very good not great but remember this is a kid who is 6-4, 230-you just don't see kids that big running relays, the 200 and in the jumping events very often albeit at a 3A school.

James Hale is pretty well-connected in recruiting circles, but for what it's worth, he's a shameless OU homer. If a recruit gets a generic mail-out from OU, Hale will annoint the kid as a "can't-miss" prospect who would be lucky to suit up for his sainted Sooners.

With that said, if Coach Gundy visited this guy, there must be a reason to think he's got considerable talent. OU hasn't been recruiting middle-of-the-road guys in recent years.

With all the tight ends SMU is collecting, this guy sounds like a defensive end waiting to happen.

With the addition of this guy (and if he stays in the backfield), does that mean Jessie Henderson and Jacoby Jones (and other RBs) aren't as important, given the small class we'll sign in February?

No you sign the best players availiable and with Mckinney's size he eventually may play RB, FB, TE, H-Back, DE, or LB.
