A hunch makes much more sense than saying that he is leaving because they recruited over him with a walk on. If that was the case wouldn't casell have been more of an impetus than this walkon? Same class and he is actually on scholarship.

His coach is a friend of June's agent.

We sign a QB every year. Do you not want June to recruit QBs until he doesn't have any on campus? With your logic, we should say good-bye to all the players on the roster because they are recruited over with every class.

What makes you say that? The report Pride found says he's 6-1. Or are you talking about Kolney Cassel? All reports suggest he's 6-2. It seems that some of us are looking at this the wrong way. Nobody is saying this new guy is going to play. Until he shows otherwise, maybe he's just a practice body. If he does so well that he works his way on to the depth chart, great.

In practice, the offense does a drill in which all four receivers run routes - no defense, just running the routes - and all four catch passes on every play. (If they went one at a time, nobody would get enough reps.) After Garrett Krstich got hurt, there were only three healthy quarterbacks on the roster: Garrett Gilbert, Conner Preston and Neal Burcham, so GA Timmy Chang had to step in and throw.

Most coaches want to sign at least one quarterback in every recruiting class. When he was at Florida, Steve Spurrier used to say his goal was to have five HS All-America QBs on his roster at all times. SMU now has six QBs on next year's roster: Gilbert, Preston, Burcham, Cassel, Kent and Carter. Coaches always have said they want more depth, right? Looks like there's some depth now. If someone gets hurt, and someone else is running the scout team offense, at least they'll still have four guys to throw in practice every day.

I think its pretty clear he is making the joke referencing Preston and Colbert.

It could be both but in this case since this young man is a walkon I do not think it is either.

You're right. Forgot about Colbert (was thinking 2013, not 2014).
Thanks.

Two pages of comments as I write this and no mention of the number of stars awarded by rating services or mention of the interest shown by other colleges, or grades, but JJ's buddy recommends him? I'm always glad to see a succesful HS player want to attend SMU, but incline towards the practice player projection until we see otherwise in spite of the MVP and other accolades noted.

Corona del Mar has about two thousand students in six grades per the WIKI, which I guess would equate to a smallish 4A program in Texas. It does seem to have a good record so far as college preparation is concerned.

panhandle_pony wrote:I read an article by Leigh Steinberg for the Corona del Mar HS newspaper. Apparently he writes a column for them on a weekly basis. In any event, with Steinberg as June's agent (still ?) and with a direct link to Cayman Carter's high school, wonder if Steinberg was instrumental in referring Carter to SMU ? Just connecting dots this evening as nothing on TV is worth watching.

If this is true panhandle pony, shouldn't Cayman be attending Arizona St?

I will only say this high school isn't known for producing d-1a football athletes.

The kid is a walk-on. Either he makes it or he doesn't. Why is everyone making such a fuss over it?
