Re: New Conference Sports
It's embarrassing that once again after the first week of March there isn't any sport to care about for the next........half year basically.
Re: New Conference Sports
Long term we need to add Baseball/Softball. Short term we really need to bring back our men's track team considering all the athletes June is recruiting in football. They could really strengthen/add depth to the men's track team and at some point we are going to lose out on a recruit that really wants to play football and run track. Say no to lacrosse. No revenue and it really isn't going to do much for the school. We already have soccer and at least MLS is building traction. Swimming gives us recognition in the olympics. Golf gives us recognition on the PGA tour with the likes of Payne, Colt, Kelly, Hank, etc. Tennis can give you some recognition as well, think Brunstrom, Reneberg, Ralston.

So, we cut Men's and Women's Soccer, Women's Track/Field & Cross Country, Women's Volleyball, Equestrian, Men's & Women's Tennis, Men's & Women's Golf and, last but apparently least, Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving. Well thought out and constructive. Then we can worship at the altar of FB and BB. Perfect for me. This clears the air and focus on what is truly important, revenue sports, athletic arms race and media dictating to us. Ideal. Great college experience for students.SMU2007 wrote:Add baseball- cut anything other than fb and bball.
I also like the idea of lacrosse. Those 4 are the only sports with any kind of media attention

Re: New Conference Sports
Back to initial question, about Metro Conference sponsorship of sports. This relevant as were Olympic Sports play is important. My guess is that it is being worked out, however soccer, track, baseball, swimming, softball, volleyball are on the primary list. Sports such lacrosse may not make it as much of men's teams departed and limited motivation to add them. To stay Division I, SMU needs to maintain current teams but I doubt any additions for now.

Re: New Conference Sports
lacrosse would do way more than baseball or tennis. Its the fastest growing sport, it lines up much better with the schools where we recruit, and would draw better with students then tennis or baseball.
Not sure why we keep dumping money in tennis. small team with an even smaller following - takes up a ton of real estate and is basically dying.

Sorry to step on your toes since you a clearly a biased swimming supporter, but we don't have enough money to fund an infinite amount of sports and lacrosse/baseball would directly benefit the school.Water Pony wrote:So, we cut Men's and Women's Soccer, Women's Track/Field & Cross Country, Women's Volleyball, Equestrian, Men's & Women's Tennis, Men's & Women's Golf and, last but apparently least, Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving. Additionally, cutting all of your above mentioned sports would have exactly zero impact on the "college experience"- except for those select few scholarship athletes. It's not about "revenue sports". It's about sports that people are interested in watching.

And, you forgot to mention that Title IX and the Feds would not be too happy with your prescription. As for "zero impact" on college experience, thank god you are not bias, besides the fact we will no longer be Division I without a certain number of sports, as pointed out by someone else.

I'm not biased in that I have no particular allegiance to any one sport. And no, I don't think we should cancel sports to the extent that it will drop us out of division I- don't be ridiculous. I'm just saying having a "fill-in-the-blank random sport such as swimming" does not impact the university to the extent that I believe a lacrosse team or baseball team would. If swimming went away, the only people who would notice are those currently on the team. If we had a successful lax team, I think a lot of people would take notice.Water Pony wrote:Yes, I am biased (and we can assume you're notSMU2007 wrote:Water Pony wrote:

BTW, there are hundreds of student-athletes in the above sports with only a small number getting "full-rides" and most are "walk-on's.

Re: New Conference Sports
I like lacrosse just fine, but baseball? Pro baseball is boring enough. College baseball is like a stadium full of Ambien. Zzzzzzzzz.......SMU2007 wrote:Add baseball- cut anything other than fb and bball.

And absolutely not cutting anything else. I admit I wouldn't miss tennis or golf, but tennis is getting another new facility built (eventually), and golf has something going on at Dallas Athletic Club and with that new course (maybe) in South Dallas, so they're not going anywhere.
Everyone I have asked says no new sports for years to come.

Our many All-Americans, National Champions and Olymipians from Swimming & Diving are a source of pride to most Americans and our university and which every four years is critical to the US and International Olympic Team Medal counts, some of whom swam at SMU. As for avoiding dropping out of Division 1 due to insufficent number of Men's and Women's sports, we are at the minimum now.
BTW, I agree on adding LAX for Men and Women, one of the fastest growing sports in the country and a great spectator sport, as well.

GO MUSTANGS!
Re: New Conference Sports
I completely disagree on adding lacrosse.
Re: New Conference Sports
The fact is that there are only a certain number of teams any university can fund. Yes, it would be great if we could fund every single sport and not cut any or hurt anyone's feelings when their former sport got axed. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that- so I think it is important that we choose which sports best help our university. There can be plenty of discussion debating which sports those should be.
And obviously we don't HAVE to add anything. I just think it makes for good discussion if/what could be added to benefit the school.

Re: New Conference Sports
Like I 've said before, bringing back track is a no-brainer as it goes hand in hand with football. It would be nice to add baseball, especially since we are in Texas. Lacrosse does nothing for SMU. Soccer doesn't do much either, but we already have it and have been successful so I see no reason to drop it.
