40 time at the combine probably killed any chance of his getting drafted
Good blocking he would do fine, he is elusive with holes.he was sick during combine.

Says Gerhart was a 4.53 in 40 - was he hurt last year? Only 50 ATT, 169 yds. Maybe the Vikings dump him depending on contract.

I had read that Zach was sick at the combine and that's a shame that he went ahead and participated which may have hurt his draft status, but if you aren't going to be drafted until the 6th or 7th round, might even be better off going free agent route. That way, you can hopefully hook up with a team where you have a good shot at making the roster and the money probably won't be much different

The biggest diff in late (6-7) rounds picks and UFA is guaranteed money. Although significantly more in the early rounds, some of that contract money will be guaranteed … not usually (rarely) is it for a UFA. As an UFA, the NFL does not even have to pay at the league min rate until a player makes the 53 man roster, which is usually stipulated in the contract. That same scenario can also happen for late picks too. Practice squad is not incl in that; PQ is usually in the $90-110K range per year. There are a lot of other things they can do as well. But nonetheless, it’s still a nice pay day for these guys for awhile.

Bryan McCann can also be added to the "never say die" crowd. Good luck to all these guys, we should here something on Spike soon. I feel bad for the mustangs that dealt with injury's and went down with season and career ending injury’s, and could not give it a go at pro-day … we might have been able to add a few more names to the list. That’s one of the big pluses of SMU and a SMU degree …. It gives you a GREAT plan "B".

Update; Spike has signed a UFA deal with GB to play FB. He will be a stud FB in the NFL ... just like MIller (UCF DE) now the FB with the 49er's. I put spike at the top of the list of guys with the best UFA chance of sticking ... and no one play s-teams any better then him. Congrats spike

It's probably a bit optimistic to compare a conference Defensive Player of the Year with a guy who rarely (ever?) started a game in his career.

He wasn't hurt. He fumbled multiple times in crucial moments early in the year and IMO lost the trust of the coaching staff. That and the fact that Adrian Peterson made the NFL his [deleted]

I was not really comparing Spike to Miller, but using Miller as a good example that made the transition. But, now that you raise the point … I think Spike does compare well to Miller. I’m not talking DE to DE, but the skills and ability to transition to FB. Spike had better measurable numbers overall … 4.7 40, 34" vert, 10’3" b-jump and other great numbers at 290. Can you imagine a 265 Spike? I pity the LB meeting him in the hole or on the edge. The NFL boys loved Spikes upside as a FB, that’s why he had 4 teams aggressively pursing him for his services as a UFA FB. The kid was a good TE in high school; he can catch, block and run.

With our "d-line" rotation, starting vs. non starter is not a big deal or diff. Spike played a ton, some DE as well and was in the game during crunch time. Nothing against Miller, just pro-Spike and what I perceive as a great fit for his size, athleticism, high motor and mean streak. I think he has a great chance to stick, and I bet Aaron Rodgers loves him and special teams coach also.

Update to T-Pit, I think he has a camp invite try-out for the Texans not a UFA. Zack will look good in Purple/Gold … one of my all-time favorite teams … not as close to home as the Lions, but close enough. I’m sure the Line’s are ecstatic … as they should be. Leo Dreousher (sp?) is not always right … sometimes nice guys don’t finish last. Way to go Zach.

This is not meant as a shot at you, PSCA -- but your post reminded me of something I have been thinking: Now that he is on an NFL roster, can we all do Line the service of learning that his first name is spelled ZACH?

Again, I'm not pointing a finger at anyone in particular. They say the best thing a salesperson can do is learn someone's name and use it. Zach Line definitely has done enough for us over the last 4 years to earn that.

My apology, esp. to Zach. It is not intentional or meant to be a lack of respect to Zach, his family and all he has done for SMU. My brain fa-- comes honest. My brother in-law of 38 years spells his name Zack … it’s a force of habit that I have difficulties breaking. Maybe I’ll make it easy on myself going forward and just use the initials ZL. You have every right to call me out.

Are we sure about this? My buddy works in the GB organization. I asked him about Spike, and he said he did not see him on any of the UDFA lists. He did say that one of their priority FAs was a FB from UT, and that Spike might just be there for a tryout unsigned.

Confirmed that Spike is indeed in GB. However, it is on a tryout basis only. No deal has been signed.

Thanks for setting me straight, I was just going off what someone in the AD’ office told me. Good luck to spike, I think GB will like what they see.
