Re: Will SMU Eventually Require 4 Year On-Campus Housing?
I hope not. I enjoyed my time on campus for two years, but also lived off campus for two years and had a blast doing that as well. Also, a lot of influential people and friends of said people own some of the properties in the surrounding area that now rent out to SMU students- I bet they would strongly "encourage" SMU not to enforce such a rigid policy.

Screw living on campus for four years. I want my own place, my own rules, my own booze, and my own dog. Shockingly, I can do all that and still be involved on campus. Shouldn't be a goal.

Clearly you are not academically worthy of the New SMU.Stlhockeyguy02 wrote:Screw living on campus for four years. I want my own place, my own rules, my own booze, and my own dog. Shockingly, I can do all that and still be involved on campus. Shouldn't be a goal.
Does Rice require 4 year dorms?

Re: Will SMU Eventually Require 4 Year On-Campus Housing?
I believe at ND, 3 years of on-campus housing is required but students may choose to move off-campus in their fourth year. As you alluded to, many choose to stay on campus, which probably is due to both the quality of the on-campus environment and the relative dearth of nice off-campus options in South Bend.Digetydog wrote:If the system is set up right, living on campus can be fantastic. My sister went to ND and never considered living off campus. At Yale, most undergrads stay on campus in their residential colleges. I have heard very few complaints.blackoutpony wrote:When the frat houses are relocated (to just north of where the Lambda Chach house is and on that same strett), that area will be filled with admin buildings, offices and education stuff. GW doesn't want dorms across from his library. SMU does not have a plan for 4 year on campus housing. It's not in the master plan or even in the "longer term" goals of the university. There's no place to put them.
Side note, there's no way I would have atteneded school here if I had to do 4 year on campus housing. That would be awful. I have no idea why anyone would want to do that outside of living in a frat/ sorority. Even then

I lived on campus for two years and lived in the SMU Colonial Apartments for two, which is sort betwixt and between- not really dorms, but yet not quite an independant apartment. I know there is probably nothing on the drawing board for it, but I really enjoyed the SMU apartment experience. I appreciated being in dorms for the first two years but the additional freedom of being in an apartment with the proximity to campus sort of gave the best of both worlds in many ways.

I agree. And I think living in my own apt for 2 years helped me grow up (to some extent) in terms of learning how to setup and pay utilities, not completely [deleted] off neighbors, fix applicances, etc. IStlhockeyguy02 wrote:Screw living on campus for four years. In semi-seriousness, living off-campus, in my own place, did help me grow up. That's something that can be incredibly tough to do living in the fantasy bubble that is otherwise known as SMU.

I did two on and two off. Living off campus really did help me grow up and become more responsible. I was actively involved in 5 different student organizations and went to tons of sporting events. Living off campus is sort of a right of passage in mind. 4years on campus just sounds suffocating really

If I was required to live on campus for 4 yrs I wouldn't have even looked at SMU. Truthfully, that will just create the most boring college in the nation. Party lifestyle would not exist one bit and that's just not right for a college. It would attract people that are ONLY interested in academics and nothin else. Good luck getting students to sporting events that actually know what a football is. We don't want it to be Southern Meadows University.

OK, I'll bite. What is the issue with Lori White?
BTW, I lived on campus for four years and survived. Requiring at least two years on campus is a good thing. The idea of a Sophomore Quad is smart and will generate more on-campus activity and energy, including going to events.

does living in a fraternity house as a Sophomore count as part of the 2 year on campus requirement?
