Bobby Collins was a good coach that got caught up in a bad situation but my vote would be for Ron Meyer.

I would have gone with Matty Bell. He had a national championship game, a Heisman trophy winner and the second best win percentage among SMU coaches.
Ray Morrison would also be a consideration.

I think Ron Meyer and Haden Fry are better. I suspect they are going with win/loss record only
That F- re Collins got SMU the death penalty because he didn't have the stones to stand up to the powers at SMU. The 20 years of failure after he left are on him.
He was the worst coach in SMU history.

An amazing conglomeration of bumbling idiots. But I think its worth mentioning that some SMU alumni were "recruiting" players Bobby Collins didn't even want

Sadly, we replaced those idiots with new idiots (Coach Gregg is not one of the idiots)

Matty Bell as best SMU football coach

I, too, rate Matty Bell as the Best SMU Coach. However, the best SMU teams were under Ron Myer who gave us the pony express and a powerful blocking offensive line. Bobby Collins was a smarter coach than Myers, but did not generate the same power offense. Myers & Collins knew about paying the players and got us the death penalty, which puts them at the bottom of the list in terms of school records.

You think a salty coach like Matty Bell out on the prairie didn't have some recruiting funny business?

Interesting that Matty Bell was head coach at A&M and TCU also. We were overall a below average major team from the time he left the Hilltop after the '49 season until slick Ron Meyer slipped into town in his polyester slacks.

Put me in the Matty Bell camp. He won a national champ, had a Heisman winner, had many all Americans, and put us on the national football with regional games against powerhouses like Notre Dame. My understanding is his offense was very wide open for the times which won us lots of fans and national accolades. Just landing Doak puts him on top in my book. Doak could have easily went to Texas to play with Bobby Lane.
Ron Meyer and Hayden Fry are deserving because both rebuilt the program after down periods. Lastly, while I think Bobby Collins was a good coach, he inherited a great program that Meyer built. All payment issues aside, it is much easier to maintain a good program than rebuilding a bad one.
