Figure signing 38,546 wide receivers, the law of averages would eventually work in our favor.
How many of those were from Louisiana that wound up ineligible?Stlhockeyguy02 wrote:Figure signing 38,546 wide receivers, the law of averages would eventually work in our favor.
At both WR and OL, 2 and 3 years ago we had several misses or went after academic risks that didn't make it to campus, and both of those positions suffered for it. That is the reason for the lack of production at both positions over the last couple of years.Stallion wrote:we aren't signing top WR prospects. We are hoping to coach raw, sleepers up or move good athletes to receiver from other positions. We've had some names like Guinyard (3? major injuries since high school senior year) and Dieter the Fleeter (Parade Magazine's unrecruited All American) but no true Blue Chip highly recruited player except for Darius Johnson who finished among SMU's All Time leading receivers. The better question is why has this staff failed to recruit better WR talent. There's little doubt they can coach them
I assume he meant Marks, Lewis, etc. I do not think he said anything about them being a mystery.Rebel10 wrote:And who are these several mystery guys we supposedly missed on?
I think he also said some OL's as well over the past 2 or 3 years. He has said this on more than one occasion without saying who they were. I just wanted to know who he was talking about SMU missing over the past 2 or 3 years. I am sure he will let us know.Grant Carter wrote:I assume he meant Marks, Lewis, etc. I do not think he said anything about them being a mystery.Rebel10 wrote:And who are these several mystery guys we supposedly missed on?

- We had several people that either didn't make it in or flunked out after their freshman year who were more highly rated.
McDade, Collins, Nyle Johnson, Sams, Dieter
On the current roster:
- Highly regarded by all services and multiple offers:
Guinyard, Stewart, Lagasse, Sims (now RB)
- Highly regarded by multiple services, but no offers:
Hubert (different position), Dickerson, Holleman, and Taylor
- Highly rated by one service:
JJ, DJ, DT
- Not highly rated by any service:
Halverson, Deion, Holman, Nelson, and Walker.
What is most interesting to me, is that all of the starters were only rated by one service. And the people talked about in the spring (Halverson and Deion), were not big recruits. Guinyard really looked like he turned a corner from injuries in the spring, and I expect him to contribute. Both Stewart and Lagasse have talent, and with the new guys coming in I think we are starting to stabilize the receiving corp. We are still missing that super stud though.
I am still trying to figure out who the big misses were from 2 and 3 years ago he says SMU had. Especially from the OL that he keeps talking about. I'm sure he will list them to us.Stallion wrote:JasonB wrote:At both WR and OL, 2 and 3 years ago we had several misses or went after academic risks that didn't make it to campus, and both of those positions suffered for it. Jason-I admire you because actually spend some time in trying to make a reasonable point. You however are so naive and completely divorced from rational thought on SMU's recruiting that your point is weak. You list Guinyard, Stewart, Lagasse and Sims as our "HIGHLY" recruited WR recruits with multiple offers
Guinyard only got back in touch with SMU after a horrific early season injury his Senior year. He was damaged goods. Not = highly recruited
Sims got some offers - like Baylor-only because his cousin was one of the top RBs in the country(Tulsa and Rice not = highly recruited)
Lagasse was a minimum 5.5 3 star meaning he might not have been in the top half of the Texas inflated class (Duke, Rice not = highly recruited)
Stewart also a minimum 5.5 3 star . He had some nice apparent offers from Pitt and Arizona (maybe) , Houston but the rest are no big deal. When Rivals has 270 3 stars in a class it doesn't make a minimum 3 star a great prospect. It might mean he's actually BELOW AVERAGE.
Finally, you can't just dismiss all those recruiting busts and academic casualties to bad luck. In many cases teams that can't outrecruit teams for eligible players troll around for other schools leftovers hoping a quality kid will qualify late. Pay attention to what is going on in Basketball-young agressive assistants immediately, shockingly improving SMU's recruiting. When you don't have to invent an argument like you just attempted to do then you will know SMU is recruiting well in Football. It usually speaks for itself when you read the Offer List
