It's too bad he never had some sort of "parent" who could have instilled some discipline, self control, or sense in him.

That is the problem with these modern style parents. They just let their kids run wild and raise themselves for the most part and just throw money at the kids. They probably did not believe in spanking when he was at an impressionable age. No discipline installed. If my son ever lost his temper at me it would be his last time and he would know it.

Yep. Don't understand his father adding to this article at all. What does it accomplish? Nothing but more stress for his son.

"Yeah," Paul says one evening, driving in his car, "it could come unraveled. And when it does, it's gonna be bad. Real bad."

"He imagines a late-night call, and the cable news ticker, and the next morning's headlines," Thompson writes.

This is the most disturbing quote in my opinion. His dad is almost expecting his son to implode.

I don't get how he hasn't been disciplined for underage drinking and other "violations of team rules".

He has been photographed numerous times with drinks.

Heck, the UGA kicker was busted sometime around July 4 at a lake in Georgia for driving a boat with alcohol underage. He was busted by a police helicopter who radioed down to the police patrolling the lake.

Also, the father's comments that the College Station PD are picking on him are just dumb. It always seems like you're being picked on when you make yourself an easy target.

I hope they get reamed this year. I think Bama will be out for blood and Manziel may take some shots.

First of all, if I'm Sumlin or the AD at AggieTown, I make sure the entire staff knows that Mommy and Daddy Manziel get no special perks or access to anything just because they spawned this little ingrate.

Secondly, he HAS TO DO IT? Because Johnny needs love? If the only way he can show his son he lives him is by playing 18, he has major parenting issues. (Based on the behavior of his son, I'd say he already has parenting issues.) If you don't want to play golf because Junior's an arrogant, pouting, spoilsport, don't play. Take away Johnny's clubs. Take away the platinum card. Tell him that if he wants to play golf to go get a summer job and buy his own sticks and pay his own green fees. Hug your son every day and tell him you love him, but don't be afraid to tell the entitled little diva to grow up.

I don't like being a voyeur, especially on families, but this is a train wreck about to happen. The father is between a rock and a hard place . . . supporting his son, but enabling his behavior. As a result, Johnny does not appear to be mature or have the needed guard rails to understand he is responsible and not a victim of College Station police, A&M administration, NCAA rules and UT fraternities (what was he thinking? A high profile Aggie walks into a UT social event, e.g. enemy territory.) Of course, he would be called out.

The issue for him becomes what NFL GM's think of his maturity and decision-making? To those guys, character is an issue, not to mention that all this unnecessary attention may negatively impact his sophomore season.

All in all, this play is not likely have a good ending for Johnny. He will be surprised when the media gets in his face and his 15 minutes of fame dissipates. Sad, actually.

I don't know Johnny Football, but it sounds like he is sitting on the precipice. His parents sound like they are a little frightened of him and the school is fed up with him. He is now in the deep end and doesn't know what to do. All of the behavior that has been enabled over the years is making matters worse. He is either going to change or it will be a long drawn out train wreck.

His father was right about one thing - this kid needs someone in his life to guide him and discipline him when needed. The two articles make it sound like the parents abdicated that role and the university just wants him to grow up. He needs a Herm Edwards kind of guy to step up and mentor him (like he did with a post prison Michael Vick).
