Guess he likes athletic competition but not academic competition. Plus, you must wonder about his financial sense.

Either true freshman should be a positive for SMU.

His parents might have a lot of money.

[From his highlights] Baker Mayfield looks accurate, but what a weak arm. Since nobody in our secondary is still in high school, the defense should be able to easily manage the passing game. He has decent wheels, but nothing crazy. If Mayfield starts, most of our pressure will be on the DLine and linebackers to stop Tech's running backs

Any high school QB can beat a good secondary if there is not pressure on the QB. I am sure that Mason is putting together a good package to pressure the QB no matter who is in there. There more pressure coupled with less experience can bode well. But if we let anyone just stand there and throw, we will develope another Heisman QB candidate.

RFS Clayton Nicholas is not a walk-on ... the only QB Tech scholied that year I believe. Very good arm, accurate and smooth motion. I did hear that he may be in KK sh.. list right now because of uninspired school participation.

Today wast the first time that Kliff talked to the media since the beginning of the week.

Acknowledged that Brewer is hurt, and that it will probably be either of the freshman starting the smu game.
Nothing earth shattering, but if you want to read....

There is no controversy. Brewer is out.

My guess is that Webb will start given that they were battling it out before Brewer went down.

Very interesting what is going on at Tech with it QB. Don't let the sunshine pumpers out of Lubbock fool you, this is a code red emergency for them. Don't get me wrong, both Webb & Mayfield are legit college players, but having to chose between two true freshmen (one of which is a walk-on) is panic inspiring.

I'm a little surprised SMU didn't offer Baker Mayfield a scholarship.

Its been reported its a chronic type ongoing injury so at that point you've got to go with the best backup. Plus playing in the Big 12 this is a pretty important game for them to reach bowl eligibility. They also maybe just trying to screw with our minds
This. Whether Brewer, Webb or Mayfield, Tech will be starting a newb QB so hard to have any expectations. Graham Harrell is the best Tech QB I ever saw but, in his first start versus TCU, the Tech offense scored a total of 3 points. Harrell made up for it by scorching TCU the following season.

The only good news for Tech fans is that all three of these QBs appear to be special players. Brewer enrolled early and quickly jumped ahead of Tech's previous two QB recruits including Gatorade Player of the Year and Parade All American Scotty Young. Webb was little known when he committed to Tech as Tech's only 2013 QB offer but he killed it during Elite 11 QB competition and had QB guru Trent Dilfer comparing him to a collegiate Tom Brady.

The walk-on, Mayfield, dominated as a QB at Lake Travis but apparently drew little interest due to his size. However, Mike Leach offered him a scholly and that's a pretty good endorsement. He chose to walk-on at Tech over his scholarship offers. Mayfield's greatest strength is similar to Graham Harrell. He makes lightning quick reads and decisions. In our offense, that is the most important attribute for a QB.

Finally, all three QBs mentioned above are sons of H.S. coaches. Since Leach's earliest days, Tech has targeted coaches kids.

I mention all this because Tech appears to have an abundance of riches at QB currently on the roster and a stellar recruit committed for 2014 in Patrick Mahomes. That's too much talent at too similar an age group to keep together beyond this season. One or more will be looking to transfer after this season and you should hope JJ is paying attention.

Might want to check your facts again Sparky.

We went after Scotty Young pretty hard - that would be an interesting transfer. And would be our second transfer of a Gatorade player of the year at QB (Gilbert)
