Now that's a good question.
Frankly, even with some of his mistakes, I don't think GG played too badly last night.
Honestly that's a top 3 career game for him (not saying much, I know). There's not going to be a ton he can do with a line that's mediocre in pass blocking and receivers that can't really separate for YAC. Stats will end up looking a lot better though.

I agree. GG for most of the game looked pretty confident and solid. There were a few times where it seemed like he got lost in the scheme (and generally got clobbered for it), but overall I think he can build off of last night. Shead did not impress me. Injury aside, his blocking was so-so and he never seemed to be the strong, fast RB as advertised. I honestly was more impressed with Line 2.0. Didn't really notice anything about Ashcraft, which in itself says something. So basically we are on 1 for 3 on UT castoffs based on yesterday.

Agreed. Gilbert hit receivers in stride on short patterns, which is a key to Jones' offense so receivers can get YAC. There were a few cases where he held on to the ball too long and took a sack, and he had at least 3 throws to outlet receivers that landed at their feet, but all in, I thought he took a step forward last night.
Honestly, in the 12 years I've been a STH, I think he's the one of the top 2 QBs we've had. Sure that might not be saying a lot, but if we can't recruit better QBs, then I'll take a better transfer any day.
Gilbert played a solid, although not spectacular, game. More to the point, UT or any other school transfers add to our depth at most positions. There is no downsize to accepting these transfers, if they add to the depth of our roster. If they were super stars, they wouldn't be leaving and add to the team whether they are starters or not.
Might have been. In my usual manner I did not introduce myself to the nice couple with whom we were sitting. If I was the one griping about no water being available and finally finding some lemonade, that was me.

Gilbert had one of the best QB performances of the week and against a decent AQ team.
Shead was putting huge pressure on the corners with his swing passes and bouncing to hte outside. How key was that, TTU started blitzing like crazy with the outside threat of Stead out of the game. That was a huge injury.
Ashcraft has very slow feet. Is he injured? I don't know. But that doesn't mean he can't be a Hades of a great goal line straight ahead blocker.
I agree they are UT cast offs. But they are not failures or less talented than others on the team.
Take away a holding call that we universally agree was a joke (the holding call on Prescott Line) and we're talking about a quarterback who threw for over 400 yards, with a touchdown and no interceptions. In years past, most of us would have killed for a quarterback who could do that, especially against at decent AQ team.
Give Shead time.. he will do some damage. and GG is coming around. Looked great against Tech.. his accuracy got better and him running for three first downs in a row was pretty awesome

Shead - Before the injury (and I feel bad for him) he didn't look as advertised. He was neither fast nor powerful...and he had at least two fumbles. Absolutely unacceptable.
Ashcraft - Did he really get passed over by a true frosh?
This UT transfer madness needs to stop!

Gilbert did well if not good during the game. His OL couldn't do [deleted]. Shead, we have no idea since tech plays dirty.
Stallion is right again. How is it that a QB guru coach with a 5 star 5th year qb with all of the physical and mental tools is beaten by a rookie coach with a walkon in his first start as a true freshman. When was the last time a team gained almost 500 yards on offense with no turnovers and still failed miserably in scoring until the end against the TT subs? Never have I seen a team throw so many 1 and 2 yard passes sideline to sideline and so little north south passing yet when they did they had success? Only thing worse than one old offensive coach whose time has passed is to have two! The analyst Kannell said it best with SMU's offensive body language and it starts at the top.
Shows that the "stars" mean nada, and GG is a sophomore with SMU coaches and teammates, not fifth year. Keep him until 2015 and then he's the equivalent of a 5th year guy.
SFA gained almost 500 yards against our subs last year and came up with a goose egg.
I think Otto's wrong. That TD to Gaines that came back was only about 5 yards, so GG would have finished with "only" about 395 yards. How embarrassing.

Also ghost, it's not really fair to blame Gilbert failing on June. He failed to live up to expectations far before he got to the hilltop. Sometimes guys just don't make the jump from one level of competition to the next.
