Tech= more fans, more demand for TV. Also, Texas would be pressured by Texas legislature to bring another public institution with them, not a private one. Re: Big 12 preparing to implode
Also, to everyone [deleted] about the thread: no one made you click on it. I for one think that Texas hiring the ASU AD means this issue will become relevant again.
I've predicted the Big 12's remaining Big 4 would defect to the Pac-12 for some time and I've been right about this stuff more than anyone else on this board so you should probably listen up. I was calling A&M to the SEC when everyone else thought it was a pipe dream. I did whiff on VT & NC St. to the SEC but no one is perfect except for Brooklyn Decker

We actually join a (temporary) BCS conference, and instead of worry about either making it better or winning it we are trying to think up ways to leave it. And, of course, everyone else is trying to do the same.
This is why the AAC has no chance, and we are tied to losers.

Re: Big 12 preparing to implode
I just don't think the long term solution is being in a conference with UConn, Temple, ECU, etc. The move to the American was absolutely a step up from C-USA, but we should have our eyes on the same prize that TCU attained: a conference that the casual fan in TX will care aboutleopold wrote:We actually join a (temporary) BCS conference, and instead of worry about either making it better or winning it we are trying to think up ways to leave it. Re: Big 12 preparing to implode
While Uconn, Temple, ECU, UCF, USF, Cincy et al are not geographical fits with us, those programs are a huge step up in national perception and quality from what is left of CUSA.
And the boost in basketball competition is going to do wonders for SMU.

Re: Big 12 preparing to implode
I have to really disagree with you on that.
Basketball has done NOTHING for UConn, Memphis, Cincy, or Louisville (until their Football came around). Kansas would have been left at the door in the Big XII if UT had been able to go to the then PAC 10. I mean, shoot, Butler has gone to the NC game twice and has media markets. If that was football, they would have been looked at for the old Big East or new AAC. But instead they were in the old whatever conference and now the new Big East.
I am hopefull for Basketball, but I know it has nothing to do with realignment.

Memphis wouldn't be in the AAC if it weren't for basketball, I don't think. They are one of the worst FBS programs in the country. And the ACC football powers who wanted Louisville would have had a hard time selling the Tobacco Road academic snobs on taking UL and their subpar academics if not for their stellar basketball program.leopold wrote:I have to really disagree with you on that.

Re: Big 12 preparing to implode
I would hope that BB creates more "brand reconition" for SMU, which would hopefully translate to better football recruiting and a perception as a "big boy" in terms of potential. But I agree with you that BB has very little to do with realignment - FB is still king.leopold wrote:I have to really disagree with you on that.

That conference is the ACC...or a new Big 12 leftover conference.East Coast Mustang wrote:I just don't think the long term solution is being in a conference with UConn, Temple, ECU, etc. The AAC has no chance because there's nothing in it of value (hence the lousy TV deal). Doesn't matter if everyone wants out because they don't have anywhere to go.
