The following tells the story of how the MD Athletic Department is totally broke. Should be very interesting if they must raise $52 million as that figure is roughly their entire athletic budget for the year even after cutting 7 sports.

1. What kind of financial position is the SMU athletics in

Athletic revenues do not even come close to supporting the athletic budget at SMu. SMU pays for all of the excess out of the general fund. SMU is a private school and can spend and budget as they please. I recall a figure of around $ 100 million in school support to the Athletic Department in the last 10 years. MD is a public school with state imposed policy and legal guide lines re the conduct of business and budget. My understanding is that MD must have a somewhat balanced budget mixed with fund raising.skurtn wrote:This makes me wonder two things:

remember "the commitment"? As I recall, we were running an 8 million annual deficit when that announcement was made and I'm sure that figure has gone up
