We've had a very solid season considering the last decade has been dreadful. Things are looking up but we still have some ways to go. Look forward to the series we have starting next season. Yes we have quite a few seniors that have been huge for us this season but I go back to coaching and what McCarney has brought with him compared to Dodge and that whole awful fiasco. Having an increased budget for athletics and respectable pay for a coaching staff certainly does help as well.
As for SMU and someone that looks at your program from afar, my thought is that Jones has brought the program out of what it used to be but has not nearly achieved what you folks had thought and hoped for when he came. I bet the whole issue that happened with AZ State may have made things a bit weird between him and the administration.

Agreed. I am interested in his explanation.

For those who keep arguing that we should play a competitive schedule non-conference...
You guys think UNT and Rice are good?
Rice: A&M, Kansas, FL Atl, Houston non-conference. Their wins are against Massey rankings 123, 102, 146, 83, 279, 252, 223, and 200. They played a worse schedule than we have in the last 25 years, but you guys are raving about their season.
UNT: Idaho, Ohio, Ball St, Georgia. Wins against 268, 62, 91, 223, 378, 76, 252. the win against ball state (62) is made up for by losses to 96 and 130.
The average Joe doesn't give a crap who your wins are against. They just see the bottom line.
We should be scheduling one hard non-conference game every year and three pansies. Once we can get to ten wins with a really easy schedule, then worry about improving the non-conference schedule.

I agree with only scheduling one hard non conference or body bag game per season but having the rest as good but winnable. Rice had a very respectable non conference with Aggies, and Houston. Kansas while bad are still in a BCS conference. For NT Idaho is the clear puke of the 4. Ball State and Ohio both are decent mid majors. Ohio actually fell off dramatically which makes that loss worse but they've had a nice run under Solich the past few years. Georgia speaks for itself and NT made it a game with them for almost 3 quarters. Yes that doesn't mean anything ultimately but for those that saw the game they were in the game til the 4th qtr.
In the end they're not world beaters but I don't think it's inaccurate saying both Rice and NT have had a decent year as mid majors.

MG_Eagle I think he thought you were talking about SMU having a solid season (didn't look at your handle to see you are UNT).

oh, my mistake Eagle. Didn't even notice you were a UNT fan. Congrats on having a team with some upward momentum.

We should absolutely play a competitive OOC schedule because that's who the average Joe in Dallas cares about. The average Joe in Dallas doesn't give a crap about a bottom line that includes a bunch of fake wins over nobodies (see SMU attendance 2009-2013). Rice and NTSU have good teams this year and they'd both beat us but that doesn't mean we should emulate their scheduling strategies.

OOC is easy, we've discussed this 10,000 times.
Play two "premiere" P5 teams. TCU every year and then Tech/Baylor/Michigan/whoever
Play UNT- local rivalry, will bring fans
Play one pushover FCS school, and try to beat them by more than one point. Preferably a local FCS school like SFA or Sam Houston State that will bring fans
