As the days start ticking away, I fear more and more that June will be here next year. At this point, my scale has tipped towards the "he'll be back" side unfortunately....sigh.....

I think after a sub .500 season and the ASU fiasco, he can't. I think the market for a decent mid major job is $1M/year though. And keep in mind June has no buyout on his side to leave. I can see June's agent getting an offer and then trying to negotiate some $$$ from SMU for a buyout, though.

The question is, if I am June's agent, can June get a 6yr/$6M deal? If so, take it and hope to renegotiate 2 years in because June is a genius.

Yep- based on his performance (the s.t.coach) you probably wouldn't have to pay him more than about 10K.

my point exactly. As long as JJ is not coaching next year i dont care who is here. We are not going to be good anyway and recruiting would be a waste if the kids knew he was going to be gone. Plus he wouldnt be coaching our special teams if he was head coach.

The problem with that is there aren't many job openings(http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... ng-changes). Doubt Jones is interested in the EMU or FAU jobs. UConn? Boise would pay that much but he'd have an uphill battle just to become a candidate, much less to beat out Harsin and Koetter. If DeRuyter leaves, Fresno would be an attractive job. But Jones would have to fight off Kiffin and Tedford (both of whom would have an inside track). All in all, a bad year to try to use another job as "leverage".

I do not think there is any question that JJ will be back next year. He still has one year left on his current contract extension and SMU is not in the position to buy him and his staff out and pay similar salaries to a new staff. I would guess it would take roughly $ 5 million to fire him and cover the bases.
Problem is that we end up with another Doh situation where we stay with the coach too long and lose yet another year fighting back to respectability.

He was not in attendance at the 2011 edition of the NYC event, which coincidentally happened in the throes of the ASU debacle, and was also on the same day as the SMU to the Big East announcement.

If JJ is having trouble getting a flight, I know a few of the CoC folks normally fly up for the NYC event - and they don't fly commercial. Maybe he can hitch a ride on one of their jets.

But I agree, Wednesday night will be telling. The invite for the event only says Hart is coming, a question I raised back in November. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=68611

After I received the invite for the NYC event on 11/4/13, I replied to the email and asked why JJ wasn't on the list of special guests. Here's the response I received on 11/7/13 from Debbie Mulvenna, Director of Operations, Athletics External Affairs:

Coach Jones is absolutely planning to be there. We opted last year to promote the appearance of our new Athletic Director and just followed the same format this year. Coach Jones is excited to be there with us.
