Serious issue - should be a very easy article for a cub reporter to investigate. However will DMN follow up? - NOT. Too easy to be a shill for Lee Steinberg!

And if so, what rights do we have in speaking to recruits? I remember the incident with the Georgia kid where they could not return phone calls. Any chance any of this type of stuff is in play?
Again, no defense intended, just a question. I have never read up on the dead period rules.
This recruit's visit was before the dead period. It was during the weekend where several recruits visited. But during a dead period the recruits can not visit the campus nor can the coaches visit recruits their schools. They can make the usual 1 call per week to recruits. They can also email they recruits as much as the want.
Thanks.

1) The story is that the player came on campus for an unofficial visit, but Jones didn't talk to him.
2) EJ doesn't give a timeline for the visit.
3) You can absolutely go on an unofficial visit during a dead period, but the coaches cannot talk to them at that time.
I take what EJ writes with a grain of salt. Has has been involved in personal clashes with the staff over the past couple of years and has been banned from practice at least once for writing about stuff he was directly asked not to write about regarding game planning. he is not exactly professional.
What I don't know: if he came during a dead period, if the coaches were out of town doing 2014 recruiting (he is a 2015 kid), or if there were other reasons why he wasn't seen.
What I do know: he is a pretty well-regarded (4 star on one site, 3 star on another) 2015 DB who hasn't been offered by SMU yet.
So, I think what should be more of a talking point is 1) have we started 2015 recruiting evaluation yet and 2) if so, have we passed on this guy.
Hell, if I were one of the sites and wanted to get an interesting perspective, I would interview Randy Ross. He would be able to compare and contrast how things are handled at SMU versus Alabama and point out the gaps in process.

He visited during the Temple game so the coaches were here. It was not during the dead period. Also, EJ has never been banned from practice, that is Josh you are talking about.
Also you are wrong about unofficial visits during dead periods.
Definition: A "Dead Period," as the name implies, is a time when nearly all recruiting activity is temporarily shut down.
During a dead period, coaches cannot:
Make in-person recruiting contacts
Conduct in-person evaluations -- on or off-campus
Schedule official campus visits
Allow unofficial campus visits
Offer complimentary tickets to games
he only permissible communications during a dead period are phone calls (limited by NCAA regulations to one call per week) and correspondence.

Would help also if June took it upon himself to visit some local high schools and build relationships with those head coaches. Also, interviewing Randy Ross and asking him to point out gaps in recruiting is something PonyPride or JasonB could do. However, I do not think Randy Ross would say anything bad about his current employee (like pointing about gaps in recruiting) which is unlike what June Jones has done to SMU.

The SOC 4 star Jamelle Johnson visited during the Temple game which was clearly stated in a report by E.J. on his visit. interesting-I take what JasonB says with a grain a salt. Nobody in the BB offices is complaining about Scout's terrific coverage and laudatory compliments made concerning the hard work of Larry Brown and staff. If June Jones and the football staff have a problem with Scout its probably because he has truthfully quoted recruits and reported their incompetent recruiting. They ought start getting their resumes ready. Its refreshing to have some one at SMU actually tell the truth about SMU deficiencies. Scout is giving the best analysis of SMU athletics and EJ is easily the best analyst this school has had on a recruiting site

Ej is one of us, very critical when it merits being critical. I appreciate that about him, but his shoot first ask questions later mentality has unquestionably burned bridges w both revenues. Scout covers open basketball practices, don't confuse that w the staff liking ej or trusting him. They are very guarded w whom they let in, and ulric isnt exactly providing big board lists to either scout or rivals right now for different reasons. Ej is a publisher, not an analyst. A publishers job is to have access to the staffs while not burning them, not waxing poetic over the programs pros or cons. You may appreciate the candor, but I'd like an accurate big board more than finding kids on twitter and calling them. Heck, I'd like rivals to call anyone about now lol

I like Scout as well. Lots of good articles. They are doing the best of any site imo.

Get their resumes ready? Are you kidding me?
Hart and Turner are falling all over themselves to give these guys contract extensions.
If June threatens "leverage" again, they will give him another two years.

Random question, how much do the assistants make? Do we pay well over a million for the football staff other than June? It seems that way based on the $5million buyout number that's been floated here.

According to the NCAA.... unofficial visits are actually allowed during the dead period.
During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period.
That said, obviously there is other info about when that visit took place, and that it wasn't a dead period. I still think the real question is did the staff just not know about them because they hadn't started looking at 2015 yet, or were they passing on him as a prospect. Both of which are obviously questionable actions.
I was told that EJ had been banned. I'd be surprised if I got misinformation about that, but if it is off-base, I apologize.
I also want to make it clear that I have zero problem with investigative reporting. I just think EJ allows his personal relationships to get in the way of his analysis. Too many opinions written as fact...

Sorry, I have family in town, not on PF too much these days. Don't quite know what all the fuss was about, the visit was during a dead period and the coaches were not allowed to talk to the kid. I'm not saying JJ is a paragon of recruiting virtue, but this is a non-event. Move on.

Yea, I am sure they passed on him, because we are all set at DB, right.
You are probably right the EJ is banned particularly if he is exposing the staff like this. And if he wasn't before, he probably will now. Glad he did expose it, to make scales fall from our eyes.
While there may be another side of the story (i e rationalization), the player thinks we ignored him and that is inexcusable. The staff needs to do some crisis management and work overtime to rectify this perception. But as we all know, "we do what we do."
Just don't see how, if the staff was performing at 100%, an incident such as this could possibly happen.

According to SMU86 it was not during dead period. Can someone confirm this?
