This game should have zero impact on recruiting. We should never lose a recruit we want to UNT. Ever.

Would you rather play at a snobby big city school where a bunch of preppy kids drive beamers paid for out of mom and dad's trust fund OR play at a school in a smaller town with hard working kids with no silver spoons? You can to some extent say the same thing about tcu but there are some players who would be turned off by the smu image. (Just playing devils advocate here.)

The pot calling the kettle black...

Didn't he already say that you could say the same thing about TCU in his post?

I'm sure the SMU coaching staff explains these reasons you list to the HS athletes they try to recruit and usually fail miserably. Fact is the culture of the team and the attitude of the coaches is more important than the reasons you list. Being a private school for rich kids is a negative that schools like TCU and SMU have to overcome.

The "culture of the school" is something the alumni think matters which matters very little to the recruits. You think USC students have anything in common with their football team? Duke? Baylor? Baylor students are the biggest bunch of milk toast momma's boys and girls there are - they have nothing in common with their team - particularly this team.

Recruits care about playing time, TV time on a good network, big time program or not, likelihood of going pro, access to good looking women, exciting game day experience, if teammates are like them, and cool uniforms. That's it.

They give lip service to fitting in with the school and also to their "major" - but those two things are irrelevant.

Of course games like these can sway the minds of 16-18 year olds. Recruiting can matter especially when both schools are on the same or similar boat.

We should not be going after the same level of recruit that UNT is going after. We should be going after recruits that are a notch higher.

I agree that all schools should go after recruits that are probably higher level but the reality is the success rate in getting them will be very low. Go after recruits and coach them up. That's what TCU did for a long time, Boise etc. So much of CFB is about system and coaching and even if you don't get the best recruits, if you coach them up like hell then you should have a great chance at success in my opinion.

TCU got several recruits with BCS offers before they went to the Big 12. You need to do your research before making those statements.

TCU out recruited 9-10 teams on their schedule just about every year including SMU every year. TCU had about 4 years where they had the No. 1 non-BCS class in the Country and almost all were near the Top of non-BCS schools. Recruiting is relative to your competition and that's how TCU had so many 10+ win seasons. Patterson's a good coach but he had more highly recruited athletes on his team on almost all matchups on his schedule except for the occasional BCS games. Even in comparison to BCS schools, about 65% of TCU's recruits had quality BCS offer during a decade long period-they won plenty of real recruiting battles against top programs.

Right, they had the number 1 non BCS recruiting class country more than one time. TCU even out recruited some middle and lower tier BCS schools at times.

It is possible to recruit those kinds of kids. June is just...lazy.

June is not "just" lazy. There are much larger problems than lack of effort. He clearly does not know how to put together a plan to recruit effectively, trying harder at the wrong approach does not equal great improvement.

Didn't he and his staff do a Houston and Dallas Blitz of the high schools back in the spring?

Classic " Catch 22" situation. SMU is expected to win so good/ top recruits will disregard a win and the game unless SMU loses which would then adversely impact recruiting.
