BYU 1984 is the real answer though.
Before that, you have to go back to Army in the 1940s and SMU, TCU, Cornell, etc. in the 1930s - which I believe proves your intended point.

Won't they put the national championship trophy in the Hall of Champions? Or will they put it in the coach's office? Has admin approved the placement of the trophy in the coach's office?

I love the enthusiasm, but even if we went 13-0 and 4-0 against the SEC they wouldn't let us in.

So if he sets the goal at winning a national championship, but the best he can do is a conference championship or even a New Years Six bowl, I'll take it. I'm all for setting lofty goals.
