I'm confused. I thought they tore down the natatorium to put the new alumni center in. What's going where the nat was?

Natty site has three main competitors battling it out, from what I was told by an admin a few weeks ago: 1. Student Center 2. Cox 3. Meadows performance hall

New student center? our existing student center isn't that old - i can't see them starting from scratch on that!! Meadows is already a waste of real estate. Most amount of facilities serving the smallest number of students - and none of them give back much after graduation. Bet on Cox It pays for the entire University.

It opened in the fall of 1987.

H-T, as others here said, is a poor excuse for a student center. Basically it has a few restaurants on the ground floor that have awful hours, the "market" that has marginally better hours and all offices on the third floor. No one hangs out there or wants to take a break there in between classes because there's no reason to. It needs to be overhauled.

Could be one of the following:
New student center
New Meadows classrooms
New Cox classrooms
My understanding is that those plus the alumni center were all in the consideration set for that land.
And they tore down the natatorium because it was deemed structurally unsafe, not because they had a firm plan for that land

Almost 30 years, corresponding by the way to 30 years of football suckitude.
I believe that the Umphrey Lee Center was the student center 32 years 1955-1987, but may be slightly off on that first date

Has Hughes-Trigg ever really been a place for students to hang out? The Market was nice when it opened, but other than that I can hardly ever remember spending much time in there. Of course, I never really spent much time in Umphrey Lee before Hughes-Trigg opened other than the cafeteria.

That's interesting. When I was at SMU, H-T was where I spent most of my breaks between classes. The courtyard on the lower level was a great place to just sit around and read or talk with whoever else was there at the time.

Never hung around HT as an undergrad. As a part time masters student I go there even less.
